[abandoned] gedit, no preferences menu, again

Hi,

I *do* know the missing 'preferences' menu from gedit is a known old issue.

I tried to apply fixes like these : https://en.terminalroot.com.br/display- … nces-menu/

I do have installed gnome-settings-daemon (it was missing, so the fix above couldn't even be applied)

... in the end it still doen not work.

Thing is : I'm using xfce as a DE.

(I know why I quit Gnome, won't go back, that's not the point here so please don't suggest that ;-) ).

Does anyone know of to access gedit preferences ? Or any 'menu' to begin with  , in my case I can only open and save documents, that's .... not much.

thank you !

Re: [abandoned] gedit, no preferences menu, again

You should have on right upper corner button with three horizontal lines (on the left side of minimize, maximize and colse buttons). Press that button with three horizontal lines and you should see menu with also have preferences option.

I have gedit version 3.34.1 (gedit-3.34.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz package). I also don't use gnome, no gnome-settings-daemon installed.

Agreed : I *should* have this corner button.

Sadly I dont :-(

I don't know how to join a scfeenshot, buy, there's simply nothing there.

Re: [abandoned] gedit, no preferences menu, again

https://en.terminalroot.com.br/display- … nces-menu/ is related to Appmenu, this does not exist anymore.

So I guess there is something in your homedir, does it work with a new user ?

Just tried with 'another user'
(ok, root, dont say it loud) -> button appears !

now ... how will I find the messy part in my homedir .. that's another story.

Re: [abandoned] gedit, no preferences menu, again

The gedit config is probably under ~/.config or ~/.local. You can either remove the appropriate gedit directories or move them someone where else so gedit starts "fresh" so to speak. Is this gtk3 theme related? does changing the gtk theme make a difference?

Re: [abandoned] gedit, no preferences menu, again

I don't even know howI should check the gtk3 theme.
I already reset entirely 'dconf' , gedit went back to its defaults settings (fonts, panels displayed etc) ... but no button there.

I'm trying to delete whatever 'gedit' related file I find, but not yet any result

Yeah, sorry, not a gnome user so can't say where they might be. Is there a ~/.gnome directory you can look in? I thought the gedit settings were under ~/.config but again, I am not a gnome user so can't say for sure.

Re: [abandoned] gedit, no preferences menu, again

indeed there are things there, but ... not interesting, and even deleted, nothing changes.

Thank you anyway, I may end with luck ?

I created a real new user, logged in with it, launched gedit successflyy, now trying to compare the two $HOME .... knowing that my laptop has 3 years olds and I've tried pretty much any DE I could find with this profile ... go wonder smile

Re: [abandoned] gedit, no preferences menu, again

I'm defeated :-(

2 options :
- never open gedit again, use SublimeText, which is far better anyway
- create a fresg new user and migrate all my things under this new profile.

gedit is not worth the effort

Re: [abandoned] gedit, no preferences menu, again

ok

I'd rather keep it rather than deleting it : even without complete solution it contains useful info.
Marking 'abandoned'

sorry for the confusion
