[SOLVED] troubleshooting: X channel error caused by youtube video

Hi,

When I try to watch the video

    25 DETALHES que você PERDEU em MATRIX REVOLUTIONS (EASTER EGGS + REFERÊNCIAS + ERROS) ?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-deHlb27S9o

My X closes (using either firefox or chrome) incognito mode.

I use dwm.

How can I troubleshoot this?

Re: [SOLVED] troubleshooting: X channel error caused by youtube video

Please edit your post and wrap the log in "code" tags, see https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

The X11 server related to that log did not "crash", please describe the symptons that make you believe it did.

Re: [SOLVED] troubleshooting: X channel error caused by youtube video

I have edited the question now. My working hypothesis for the moment is that this has something to do with a unicode character at the title of the video. This becomes the title of the firefox/chromium tab, and when active the same text goes to xsetroot and crashes(?) dwm. Indeed, if the tab is open (but not on focus) X remains working... that is, until I select the tab!

Re: [SOLVED] troubleshooting: X channel error caused by youtube video

How do you start dwm? xinitrc?
You could "exec xterm" instead, run dwm from there and be left w/ the xterm (don't close it at any point!) if and when dwm crashes.

DWM might leave an error message or a coredump ("man coredumpctl") - otherwise you could run it in gdb to see whether (and where) it segfaults.
If you compile dwm "-gdwarf2" you'll get proper debugging support (so you can step into and through the code at execution, but it'll require you to run dwm from outside the display manager since you will probably not be able to interact w/ the gdb term while dwm is stalled in the debugger)

Re: [SOLVED] troubleshooting: X channel error caused by youtube video

Thanks again, Seth! Indeed the problem seems to be with dwm.

What I did

Following your advice, I managed to start X without dwm (running exec xterm in .xinitrc); then I started dwm.

Now, I had isolated the unicode character which I thought was causing trouble, and (while running dwm) run

xsetroot -name XYZ

where XYZ is the unicode character in question (for some reason it is not pasted in this forum).

For the record, this is the character:

echo XYZ | hexdump
0000000 9ff0 ac8e 000a
0000005

Next step

- Recompile dwm with -gdwarf2 flag and  then run (from what I read) coredumpctl gdb -1

Coming back with more soon (I hope!)

Re: [SOLVED] troubleshooting: X channel error caused by youtube video

A bit more info.

- Recompiled dwm with the flag "-gdwarf-2"
- Started X (with exec xterm),
- run the following

$ dwm &
$ xsetroot -name XYZ

Dwm dies, and xterm is left with

$ dwm: fatal error: request code=139, error code=16
X Error of failed request: BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length error)
  Major opcode of failed request: 139 (RENDER)
  Minor opcode of failed request: 20 (RenderAddGlyphs)
  Serial number of failed request: 1102
  Current serial number in output stream: 1158

So perhaps
- the glyph cannot be rendered or Xlib cannot cannot calculate its length;
- the error is not well handled by dwm
- dwm dies...

I tried running "coredumpctl list" but there is no entry for dwm... and idea of what I am missing?

Re: [SOLVED] troubleshooting: X channel error caused by youtube video

I finally solved the problem, although I feel there is some deeper mystery lurking unsolved.

The fix was to remove the noto-emoji fonts. (Why?...)

sudo pacman -R noto-fonts noto-fonts-emoji noto-fonts-extra

For the future

I am renaming this thread to make the issue clearer mark it as solved.

It seems the whole problem is related to rendering and manipulating coloured emojis in dwm and dmenu.

See, for instance: https://lists.suckless.org/dev/1610/30720.html

Thank you Seth for the help and lesson!
