[SOLVED] Gnome does not start after updating to version 3.36

Hi,

After updating Gnome (2 days ago, to gnome-desktop 3.35.91+2+g36a8f2e2-1), my Gnome environment no longer starts; the general error I get:

Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occured and the system can't recover.
Please log out and try again.
Log out

I checked the latest Gnome 3.36 (today; gnome desktop 3.36.0-1); the same symptom holds. I am using gdm as display manager.

Changing to a virtual terminal (tty3) and issuing 'startx' results in the same error.

My '~/.xinitrc':

exec gnome-session

An alternative environment (went for Enlightenment) starts without problem from gdm.

Logging in as root (to double-check if there is some bottleneck around rights) and issuing 'exec gnome-session' leads back to the tty login screen.

Logging in as root, and issuing 'startx': X starts like a charm.

Any ideas on how to proceed to be able to start and use Gnome again?

Thank you in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome does not start after updating to version 3.36

Could you try to remove file /usr/lib/systemd/user/gnome-session-x11-services.target.wants/gsd-xsettings.target

Thank you for the hint. I tried and get the same 'Oh no! Something has gone wrong. ...' error.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome does not start after updating to version 3.36

I ran into the same thing, just for my user, starting a session with root worked as usual. I ended up manually removing all files from my ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions folder. That took care of the "Oh no" error. Had to be one of my outdated extensions.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome does not start after updating to version 3.36

@thepabloleon: Many thanks for raising this direction; it solves the puzzle.

To sum up:

  • My packages (including the AUR ones) were up-to-date.

  • Removing the files from '~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/' does not help on my system; the same error occurs.

  • However, deleting in addition the files from '~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extension-updates/', Gnome starts.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome does not start after updating to version 3.36

This is a known bug with 3.36. A proper fix is pending to be merged and should avoid this issue in a future upgrade of gnome-shell.
