Display Problems with Gnome Installation

Hello,

I am relatively new to Linux and I hope I can get some help with a Gnome installation on Arch Linux. I value minimalism, so I tried to install the bare minimum - but obviously I missed something!

I have an old Toshiba Satellite A200 Laptop with NVidia GeForce Go 7300. So here is what I have done:

- I followed the ArchWiki instructions and installed "base" and "base-devel" package groups.
- I then installed with "pacman -S" the whole "gnome" package group, "xf86-video-nouveau" driver, "haveged", "gst-libav", and nothing else!

I did not installed separately "xorg-sever" because I have seen it is included as dependency in "gnome".

I can login with gdm and enjoy the gnome desktop, however there are some display problems; when I switch pages in the app menu the icons become mixed up: https://ibb.co/CzNWnb3.

I know that there is nothing wrong with the hardware because I can launch Gnome from an Arched-based live environment USB and it runs without problems. However, there are many more packages installed there and I would like to only install what I need on my new Arch instalation.

Any suggestions about what other packages I have to install to properly run Gnome?

Display problems are not uncommon with the nouveau driver. Depending on the laptop, you may have two GPUs (intel and nvidia), in which case you may need to read up on that: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hybrid_graphics

I don't think I have two GPUs. Looking at the output of lspci, there is only one entry for VGA:

Hello again,

yesterday, after updating Gnome, the problem got much worse: it is now impossible to use Gnome anymore. Windows and text are most of the time invisible and/or incomplete; text in windows becomes partly visible only when I move the mouse over it.

Does anybody have any idea why this happens? I am reading the Arch forum for months now and I've never seen a similar problem.

The laptop is an old Toshiba Satellite A200-13T (2007, https://www.notebookcheck.net/Toshiba-S … 637.0.html ). It seems that part of the RAM is used as video memory: in Gnome System Monitor only 2.9GB are listed as available from 4GB installed. Can it be that somehow this is the root cause of the problem?

What I have done until now? I thought (and might be wrong!) the problem can have three causes: some packages missing, configuration files, or newer versions of packages.

1) Initially, when I first installed Arch 6 monhts ago, I thought this happened because some drivers or optional packages were not installed. This was because when I first tested Arch on this computer, in May last year, from a live USB, everything worked perfectly. I compared the packages of the live USB with my Arch installation but I could not spot anything missing.

2) Of course it can be some configuration problem (files, kernel parameters) but I am lost here. An ideas to try?

3) Or, it can be the different versions of Gnome causing this. Now I realize, after installing the last version, that I tested three consecutive versions of Gnome; and while the first version worked (May last year, I think it was 3.32), the next (3.34) was having problems (see post #1), the last is unusable.

I would apreciate any hints that would help solving this problem. It is an old laptop but I do not want to just throw it away. I would be happy to provide any further information if needed.

I have a similarly severe Gnome bug that just occurred after updating. Every time I enter the application menu/select screen for viewing open windows the open windows don't appear and I can't exit it to view or even interact with any windows.

These two statements are contradictory: Gnome is maximalism. If you want minimalism, install a simple window manager.

Install something other than Gnome. Openbox is a good choice for a WM, and it will work on old hardware without complaint.

Or, if you want help with Gnome, post some relevant information. Wayland or X? Read your Journal or xorg.log accordingly.

I chose Arch because I value minimalism. Unfortunately, Gnome is the only desktop I have experience with, that's why I chose it. But if I can't repair Gnome, I am ready to look into other desktops or window managers. It worked everything very well with Gnome until the last update.

When I installed Arch/Gnome six months ago, the default was Wayland. I saw first the display problem in Wayland and I thought the two are related. That's why I decided to switch to X. But in X it was the same.

Some questions:
- does "nv" mean NVidia?
- why are both "nouveau" and "modesetting" loaded? Can this lead to some sort of conflict?
- "nouveau" is used as a driver. Does it make sense to uninstall "nouveau" and try the others (modestting, fbdev, vesa)? Modesetting works well with Intel, could it also work with NVidia?

I was also thinking to use the nvidia-304xx-dkms driver but I read in the wiki that I would have to downgrade Xorg. Is there any chance for the nvidia-304xx-dkms driver to work with Wayland? Anybody tried this?

That's not going to work. Downgrading xorg is a much more sustainable endavour and you also likely have to add the kernel to this list. FWIW I'd say you are much better of using a distribution that has a lower base line in terms of software for a system this old. You'll be constantly fighting the up to date Arch stack and your old system HW stack.

You might also want to try the LTS kernel it might just be a recent nouveau regression.

Regarding the other questions.

- nv stands for the old (pre-)nouveau open source driver, its irrelevant in any remotely modern capacity.
- Xorg just tries to load whatever it detects as being capable of handling the HW. It's not a conflict, noveau is preferred and grabs the device first
- That is something you could try, however if you had issues on wayland as well I doubt that this would help much, just remove xf86-video-nouveau to test this.

Same trouble here with a fresh install on an old Acer Aspire 5630.
It's also a Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300 and i have same artifact on GDM and GNOME+wayland, GNOME Classic and GNOME+Xorg display.
Before, this laptop was install with Ubuntu 18.10 and all worked fine.
I don't know if the mistake goes from Xorg or nouveau driver...

Unfortunately no. It seems the mistake comes from Gnome itself. I installed Openbox and everything works perfectly (using nouveau and Xorg), most Gnome applications run also in Openbox.
