Using ctrl-atl-f2 (or other f key) switches me into another TTY as expected. But when I switch back, my x session is closed, and either the TTY login prompt appears or the TTY hangs. My thoughts are that lightdm is trying to lock down the TTY for security, even though I don't want that behavior and have not configured it as such.

Just to be sure: how are you switching back? On my setup I switch back with ctrl-alt-F7 (standard X11), if you use F1 you are going to the wrong tty

Wow, it was that simple! Thanks so much. I assumed it stayed on TTY1 since that's how it worked before I switched to lightdm.
