Aiptek tablet no action on touch

Good afternoon beautiful people, I hope you are all keeping safe.

I dug out my Aiptek 8000u graphics tablet a week ago, after not using it for a few years. It previously worked fairly well with the xorg aiptek driver. But everything is changed now that we have libinput, and I also have a different laptop.

The laptop is a basic Dell Inspiron E6410, with Alps trackpad and rubber stick thingy.

So, stylus position works ok, the buttons on the side of the stylus work correctly, pressure is detected although it starts a cm or so above the tablet (https://wayland.freedesktop.org/libinput/doc/latest/tablet-support.html tells me this is correct). However there is no response to BTN_TOUCH events, although I can see them using libinput record,

The BTN_TOUCH event is sometimes generated before the stylus even touches the tablet. It seems a bit random.

The other weird thing that happens is that if I generate BTN_TOUCH event, my trackpad sometimes becomes locked in a "clicked" state, so for example if I'm drawing in the Gimp, the trackpad now produces a line continuously until I unplug the tablet. After doing this a couple of times it's stopped doing it.

It would be nice if I could get the function "keys" along the top of the tablet to work too but I'm not seeing any events for them being generated. They partially worked with the old xorg driver so I know it's possible. (Edit - I stand corrected, they do generate events, just not quite correctly).

The puck seems to work ok except for scrolling being confused. Same issues with getting mixed up with the trackpad sometimes and a play with xinput needed

If I run libinput debug-gui the tablet appears to behave correctly.

xinput gives me:

I've just updated Arch but it's not made any difference.

So how do I get the BTN_TOUCH event to generate a click type of event so I can actually use the stylus?

Really hoping someone can help me with this!
