[SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

Hi, I have a problem with my display configuration, however I don't know where to start. May be someone here could give me a hint.

Sometimes, especially when starting a game, my display goes black with a message "out of range". I started to dig and my first idea was, that the resolution might be to low. So I ran xrandr to see, what I get:

These are many resolutions, which I know my monitor doesn't support. Reading EDID file, I'm getting the list of real resolutions my monitor can do. F.e. nothing below 640x480 should actually appear in xrandr.

Anyway, I didn't believe that a game would go below 640x480 anyway, so I started to switch resolutions to see, what would theoretically work. And here I stumbled upon another strange thing. I am using xfce4 and if I run display settings there, I am getting 120Hz frequencies for all the lower resolutions. My monitor can only 60Hz. So the problem is obviously, that the game goes to its default resolution, let's say 640x480 by highest possible refresh rate, in this case 120HZ instead of 60Hz. This is the point, where my monitor says "goodbye" and goes dark. Does anybody know where to start? Where are this strange resolutions coming from? Why does xrandr show only resolutions (also unsupported) with refresh rate of 60Hz, by display settings in xfce4 mean to have also 120HZ support?

Re: [SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

The extremely low modes are some VESA defaults (and text modes), you'll likely not be able to select them:

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 320x240

Neither would be any game.

Also while I've no idea where the xfce UI pulled those frequencies, it's not from the randr table, so it's unlikely that the game (unrelated to anything xfce) would have the same "error".

What can you do when the output drops after starting a game?
Can you switch to a differen VT (ctrl+alt+f2 etc.)?
Does the output come back (eg. when you blindly terminate the game)?
Do you have the opportunity to ssh into the relevant system?

You want to obtain the kernel ringbuffer after this happened (ie. at least you need a clean reboot, not a hard power cycle) and ideally we'd look at the "DISPLAY=:0 xrandr -q" output while the issue is present (from a different VT or via ssh)

Re: [SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

Well, I actually can switch to 320x240. At least I can fire up the command and the display goes dark with the "out of range" error. Anyway, neither does my monitor support this resolution nor that high refresh rate. After starting the game I can hear, that it runs. When moving the mouse I hear the the UI making sounds, when going over its elements. Sometimes, if I try really hard, I can get to VT, but this doesn't work most of the time either. I can ssh to the machine too. I'll try to obtain the info you say.

Re: [SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

I started the game and the screen went black. From the other machine over ssh I got this:

The resolution is obviously 640x480, but I guess the refresh rate is 120Hz. If I try to go 640x480 from xfce4 display settings, I get 120Hz as default refresh rate.

Re: [SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

One interesting observation. I started over ssh this:

DISPLAY=:0 xrandr -s 1920x1080

The display blinked two times and turned on again, in the game with correct 640x480@60Hz. What happens there?

Re: [SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

The Game™ (which one? Is this an isolated problem?) seems to reset the resolution (maybe switching between windowed and fullscreen mode) and picks a valid modeline.

What's the output of

xrandr -q --verbose

(regardless when, we want to see the detailed modelines for the various resolutions/refresh rates)
Do you use xf86-video-amdgpu or the modesetting driver (in doubt consult the Xorg log)?

Re: [SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

This is not an isolated problem. I'm just trying "SpecOps: The Line" through wine, but it's just an example. I'm getting this problem with all games and applications, which switch to (probably) 640x480 full screen resolution. The most prominent example for me is Dosbox with a lowres game. I have to check once again, but there games like Doom go even 320x240. I could workaround the issue there enforcing fullresolution=1920x1080.

I am using modesetting, probably I should try xf86-video-amdgpu indeed.

Re: [SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

640x480 (0x72) 54.000MHz +HSync +VSync DoubleScan *current
        h: width   640 start  688 end  744 total  900 skew    0 clock  60.00KHz
        v: height  480 start  480 end  482 total  500           clock  60.00Hz

If the amdgpu driver doesn't behave better, you might have to remove the built-in mode and add an explicit modeline without dated CRT stuff… :-(

Thank you for your help and, please, sorry to annoy you, but could you please give me some background regarding this DoubleScan. What exactly does it mean? I always try to understand the root cause of the problem. If you don't mind.

Re: [SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

And yes xf86-video-amdgpu works indeed. All the 120Hz rates and low resolutions disappeared and the game goes now 640x480@60Hz as expected. Is this a bug in modesetting driver? If yes, may be I should report it upstream, I guess?

Re: [SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

A CRT monitor (the bulky things we used 15 years ago) would use this instruction to post every line twice. This would allow it to render low resolution outputs without undercutting its frequency range (because the CRT could not move arbitrarily slow)
It has no relevance for LCDs that I'm aware of.

Edit: not sure whether that's considered to be a bug - the driver is generic by design. Ideally the server could filter nonsense modes (the nvidia blob optionally does such to some degree)

Thank you for the explanation, I'll take a read on it. Still, do you think this is an issue in modesetting? Or is it something else? I mean why does amdgpu work as expected and modesetting not?

Re: [SOLVED] Display resolution out of range

This looks like it could be about the same issue you had https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xse … issues/956 .

Personally I think not using EDID correctly is a bug in modesetting driver.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
