Then I downgraded to nvidia 440.64-4 and linux 5.5.9.arch1-2, and now it works fine.

I have a GTX 660.

Any ideas of how to solve this?

You need linux 5.5.13.arch2-1 for nvidia 440.64-9

Thanks, now it works!

How did you knew that?

I ask as I would like to know so I can prevent something like this happening again.

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia 440.64-9 and/or linux-5.5.13.arch1-1 prevents startx

Make sure your top mirror is one that actively syncs (100%, close to your location, low delay time). It should under normal circumstances not be possible to get that kind of a version mismatch a new kernel should always be accompanied by a respective nvidia package.

This is also something you can watch out for, if you do a complete system update and get a new kernel but not a new nvidia package (and vice-versa) you should raise an eye brow (there are a few cases where this general rule doesn't hold true but that really is very seldom e.g. a real new nvidia driver version built against the current kernel, but the kernel updates so frequently that the necessary rebuilds will almost always coincide with a new kernel )

You could also install linux-headers and the nvidia-dkms package instead, that way you can avoid these synchronisation gotchas, but the kernel module will be built locally on your system which can take a moment.
