Shutdown problem

When I shutdown Al on my laptop, my harddrive emits a loud "click" sound.  Why is it occuring? - is it harmful to the drive?

Re: Shutdown problem

Depend on what you mean for loud.
Normaly on all hard drive when you shutdown the system the heads goes in a safe position. On laptos hd the sound is more loud due to the little dimension of the hd. Little hd are more noisy than bigger one.

Re: Shutdown problem

Ever tried another os on the laptop? I don't believe it is arch, but you should try out, maybe by a knoppix or amlug test.

Re: Shutdown problem

I've used Red hat and Windows... the click is AL specific. Its not the cdrom either. Imagine the click sound your hard drive make when read/writing, and amplify it.
