[Solved] How to debug in order to use DRI3 in Vmware Fusion 15.5

Basic Information:

  • Vmware Fusion 15.5.3

  • kernel version 5.5.13

  • Xorg 1.20.8-1

Issue:

  • DRI3 failed to initialize in the following setup:

Other Information

  • I tried compiling and installing latest Mesa from source, which didn't help.

  • I tried compiling xf86-video-vmware but failed at build stage.

  • I tried installing OpenSUSE. DRI3 in Scenario 1 works and resolution doesn't get updated.

My Questions:

  1. How to get verbose log for '(EE) vmware(0): Failed to initialize direct rendering DRI3.'

    1. It seems to me that DRI3 requires something like "exclusive control of GPU".

    2. From arch guest, are there configuration files (or kernel options) for claming exclusive use of GPU hardware?

    3. From host, are there any particular .vmx file settings preventing DRI3 from being initialized?

  3. In general, How to get DRI3 working in Scenario 1?

  4. Any reading suggestions in general to improve my understanding of the underlying principles?

I got it solved by recompiling and installing xf86-video-vmware

It turns out that vf86-video-vmware installed from pacman does not match the latest xorg version (1.20.0 vs 1.20.8)

Here is the solution:

git clone https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-vmware
cd xf86-video-vmware
./autogen.sh
curl https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/plain/trunk/gcc8.diff?h=packages/xf86-video-vmware > gcc8.diff
patch -Np0 -i gcc8.diff
./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-vmwarectrl-client
make
sudo make install

Installing software without using our tools (makepkg / pacman ) is a bad idea on archlinux and will give problems.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?

I've tried using asp to recompile and install xf86-video-vmware and it works:

asp checkout xf86-video-vmware
cd xf86-video-vmware/repos/extra-x86_64
cat PKGBUILD | sed -n '/pgpkey/ p' | sed -n 1p | sed -r "s/.*'(.*)'.*/\1/" | xargs gpg --recv-key

makepkg -s
makepkg --install
