Hi there,
since my last update to wxMaxima 19.09 / Maxima 5.43.2 menus aren't displayed correctly. Instead of normal letters I see small boxes with four small letters or numbers in them. This only occurs in wxMaxima. Other applications are not concerned. Even wxMaxima has run normally before. I am using xfce as window manager.
Any ideas? Missing fonts??

The next update changed the situation a bit: at startup of wxMaxima I got the error message
"locale zh-CN cannot be set"
Somehow, during the update the preferred language was set to Chinese. So, the language can be set back to the original value by choosing the second menu from left, last item on list ('Configure'). Just set it to some other (unreadable) value. Then restart wxMaxima. Repeat until you get something you can work with to set it to the desired value.
There might be other ways like editing ~/.wxMaxima
