Hda-jack-retask does not allow loading soundcard drivers [SOLVED]

Hi everyone,

I have recently installed Arch using GNome desktop on a HP envy 2014 that has beats audio. I have followed the arch wiki to enable all the speakers of the computer using hdajackretask from this link https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HP … _15j#Sound. I disabled pulseaudio applied the pin override for testing. I tried enabling pulseaudio by running 'pulseaudio' on a terminal but it could not be enabled, then I run 'pulseaudio --daemonize'  and the new pin configuration worked as expected. However, when I installed boot override and restarted my computer all drivers from the kernel could not be loaded, and the system only displayed dummy sound output. I was able to get my drivers back by deleting the file /etc/modprobe.d/hda-jack-retask.conf but the pin configuration of the computer was set back to the configuration after Arch linux installation.

I would appreciate any help on how to get the sound working as intended with all speakers.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration,
Jorge

Re: Hda-jack-retask does not allow loading soundcard drivers [SOLVED]

With the pin override applied, what's your output for

dmesg | grep snd
journalctl -b --user-unit pulseaudio
aplay -lL

? Use [ code ] [ /code ] tags without spaces for posting these.

Re: Hda-jack-retask does not allow loading soundcard drivers [SOLVED]

Thanks for the email, and sorry for not replying earlier.

I'm unsure what to do of that myself what are the contents of that /usr/lib/firmware/hda-jack-retask.fw ? Maybe also post the output of alsa-info.sh without the override applied.

Re: Hda-jack-retask does not allow loading soundcard drivers [SOLVED]

Hi V1del,

Things have changed, I did not do anything and the drivers for sound were loaded, but the pin override did not work.
I tried doing the pin override again, the driver were loaded again but the pin overdrive were not applied.

cheers,
Jorge

Re: Hda-jack-retask does not allow loading soundcard drivers [SOLVED]

This is embarrassing, I cannot find /usr/lib/firmware/hda-jack-retask.fw, neither the file hda-jack-retask.fw file nor the folder firmware in the folder lib.

Re: Hda-jack-retask does not allow loading soundcard drivers [SOLVED]

That is almost impossible, there's quite a bit of stuff that straight up wouldn't work if the entire firmware folder was missing (FWIW that file will only be present if you "enabled the boot override"), if that is indeed the case, reinstall linux-firmware.

Also that file is a script you can execute and it will dump quite a bit of chipset and audio information, I'm more interested in the output it generates than it's contents (I should have the same contents granted you didn't change anything in there tongue )

Re: Hda-jack-retask does not allow loading soundcard drivers [SOLVED]

Sorry for the mistake, this is the output of the alsa-info.sh script. I am trying to find the folder firmware and finding how to reinstall linux-firmware. Thanks again for your patience.

Re: Hda-jack-retask does not allow loading soundcard drivers [SOLVED]

This is even more embarrassing I did not install the linux-firmware. I have installed it and the pin override is working. I need to ask why my system seem to work ok although I did not install the firmware ?
Sorry if this is not relevant ignorant me wants to learn a bit and know where to do some basic reading regarding this topic.

Thank again for your time and patience mate.

Re: Hda-jack-retask does not allow loading soundcard drivers [SOLVED]

Well there are many things that can work without linux-firmware but it's just slightly surprising that seemingly the only thing that does break for someone is an attempt to override said firmware (in which case you might not even need the entire linux-firmware package but just the folder being enough?) Usually people will notice that far earlier due to their wifi card or general networking  breaking because it can't load the firmware.

However glad to hear this worked out in the end, please mark as [SOLVED] by editing the title in the first post.
