[SOLVED] libffi update breaks steam.

After lastest (2020-04-11) libffi update steam displays nothing but blank tabs.

In console output complains about missing libffi.so.6 could be found.

Installation of libffi6 from AUR helps.

Post your pacman log.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: [SOLVED] libffi update breaks steam.

pacman -S -u -y --config /etc/pacman.conf --

Are you using some kind of gui or wrapper for pacman ?

Steam doesn't have a direct dependency on libffi , so something else needs the old version (and should be updated) .
post the console output of starting steam please.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: [SOLVED] libffi update breaks steam.

There is no mention of the library not being found.  The wrong ELF class error is covered in the wiki and claimed to be normal / harmless.  You do seem to have an improperly configured locale though.

Re: [SOLVED] libffi update breaks steam.

I had the exact same output when I tried to run eog (Eye of Gnome).
After re-installing `libffi` the problems became even worse. I couldn't use `make` for example throwing the same error.
In the end, even binaries like reboot or poweroff couldn't run as I tried to restart. I sadly wasn't able to capture the output of those, as even termite wasn't able to start anymore.

After booting into a live system I had I tried installing all newer updates, but upon reboot I saw 4 of my systemd services fail (one of which NetworkManager).
In the end I installed libffi6 from the AUR as well and reinstalled linux with `pacman -S linux`...

For now it seems fixed and I can continue working like before. Sadly I can only describe the symptoms, as I don't have logs from the live system anymore...

Exact same as what?  The OP just showed output from running steam.  Eye of Gnome is not a steam game and definitely would not produce steam messages.

All because you did a partial update. Don't hijack threads, your issue has nothing at all to do with this thread.

With libffi6, even with wrong locale, steam works fine.
Also I find

./steamwebhelper: error while loading shared libraries: libffi.so.6: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32

extremely weird as

find / -type f -name libffi.so.6 -exec file {} \; 2> /dev/null

shows a few files in various places but none of them is 32bit.
That's why I prefer to consider it as non existence as these files are not in PATH and not even in any steam directories.
So I have no idea what libffi.so.6 is this error talking about.

Re: [SOLVED] libffi update breaks steam.

It's likely steams own libffi which is 32 bit.  It is bundled in bootstraplinux_ubuntu12_32.tar.xz which is provided by the steam package.  But I have no idea how steam is even *supposed* to work, so I can help understand why it's going wrong here.

I can only speculate that when libffi.so.6 is present in the system, that is used, but when it is not present, the one bundled in the ubuntu boostrap is used - but that results in the ELF error as it's 32 bit.

So I gather something needs to be rebuilt against the new libffi, but it can't be steam itself as steam doesn't depend on libffi itself.

It looks like steamwebhelper is the proximate issue, what is that from?  (edit: I just enabled multilib on my system to check ... that file is not provided by any package, though it might be generated post-install).

I think that is downloaded by Steam itself.

I don't have Steam installed in Arch atm but the OP can try

ldd $(find ~/.steam -name steamwebhelper)|grep libffi

I do have Steam installed in Debian stable and steamwebhelper in that system is linked to /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libffi.so.6

I have Steam installed in Arch and can post my output of that command later if that would be helpful.

Re: [SOLVED] libffi update breaks steam.

I have already launch ldd on steamwebhelper and here is the result:

        linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007fff668f9000)
        libcef.so => not found
        librt.so.1 => /usr/lib/librt.so.1 (0x00007f33faa49000)
        libSDL2-2.0.so.0 => /usr/lib/libSDL2-2.0.so.0 (0x00007f33fa8e3000)
        libX11.so.6 => /usr/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x00007f33fa7a3000)
        libXext.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x00007f33fa78e000)
        libm.so.6 => /usr/lib/libm.so.6 (0x00007f33fa648000)
        libdl.so.2 => /usr/lib/libdl.so.2 (0x00007f33fa641000)
        libpthread.so.0 => /usr/lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x00007f33fa61f000)
        libc.so.6 => /usr/lib/libc.so.6 (0x00007f33fa459000)
        /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 => /usr/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007f33faaca000)
        libxcb.so.1 => /usr/lib/libxcb.so.1 (0x00007f33fa42f000)
        libXau.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXau.so.6 (0x00007f33fa42a000)
        libXdmcp.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXdmcp.so.6 (0x00007f33fa422000)

So no libffi here.

Also there is no libffi in steam dir. As mentioned above I have search whole disk to look for it, and there is no 32bit version of that lib in my entire computer (no results in steam dirs at all).

in my case steamwebhelper is not in .steam but in .local:

Well that is a problem. The steam runtime ships with libffi.so.6. Are you saying that ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libffi.so.6.0.0 doesn't exist on your system?

If you start Steam with "steam", and have no overriding STEAM_* variables in your environment, steam should use this library.

If you usually use the steam-native script, then this library will not be used, and your system libraries will be used instead. This is usually where problems creep in.

If you usually use steam-native, please post the output of

lddtree ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steamui.so

You will need to install pax-utils for lddtree, if you don't already have it installed.

I'll tell even more: I miss whole x86_64-linux-gnu directory. There is only 32bit version: i386-linux-gnu

Re: [SOLVED] libffi update breaks steam.

Awesome. I was trying to find a nicer way to get steam to re-validate it's runtime, but hadn't found anything other that the nuclear "--reset" option which apparently removes all your downloaded games as well.

Perhaps opting into the steam client beta (steam => Settings => Beta participation), letting that install, then opting out again, would achieve this.In any case, glad you fixed it. Please remember to mark your thread as solved: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ow_to_post

I have tried that one and it didn't help.
I had steam installed for years and when I compare old and new content of this location, they are very different. There was much more files and dirs I was missing.
I wonder when (if at any time) steam updates its dirs.
