5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

After upgrading to linux-5.6.2, I get a system freeze a few seconds after trying to boot my Windows 10 virtual machine with PCI passthrough enabled. Virtual machines without PCI passthrough work fine.

Bad: linux-5.6.2.arch1-2 (2020-04-07)
Good: linux-5.5.13.arch2-1 (2020-04-06)

Hardware: Intel Core i9-7960X, ASUS WS X299 SAGE, NVIDIA Titan X (Pascal)

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

Core linux is at 5.6.4.arch1-1 and 5.6.5.arch2-1 is in testing .
Do those also break ?

What VM software / frontend are you using (example qemu / none , virtualbox / virtualbox , VMware / libvirt  ) ?
please post lspci -k and full dmesg / journal from a boot with the problems.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

Same issue on 5.6.4.arch1-1 and 5.6.5.arch2-1. I'm using qemu / libvirt.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

Please also post the journal for a hung boot.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

The host system freezes, hence no log entries.

I think you can use `journalctl -b -1`

-b [[ID][±offset]|all], --boot[=[ID][±offset]|all]
           Show messages from a specific boot. This will add a match for "_BOOT_ID=".

           The argument may be empty, in which case logs for the current boot will be shown.

           If the boot ID is omitted, a positive offset will look up the boots starting from the beginning of the journal, and an equal-or-less-than zero offset will look up boots starting from the end of the journal. Thus, 1 means
           the first boot found in the journal in chronological order, 2 the second and so on; while -0 is the last boot, -1 the boot before last, and so on. An empty offset is equivalent to specifying -0, except when the current
           boot is not the last boot (e.g. because --directory was specified to look at logs from a different machine).

           If the 32-character ID is specified, it may optionally be followed by offset which identifies the boot relative to the one given by boot ID. Negative values mean earlier boots and positive values mean later boots. If
           offset is not specified, a value of zero is assumed, and the logs for the boot given by ID are shown.

           The special argument all can be used to negate the effect of an earlier use of -b.

I cleared the journal, launched the virtual machine, restarted the host machine. This is what I got (https://paste.rs/2jZ):

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

Noticed the same issue here after upgrading the kernel from 5.5.x to 5.6.x.  In my case, 5.6.2 and 5.6.3 would completely lock up the host. Whereas 5.6.4+ does not lock up, but the VM never starts and qemu hangs and refuses to respond. dmesg/journalctl do not seem to log anything abnormal.

Hardware: Intel Core i7-5930K, ASUS X99 Deluxe NVIDIA GTX 980

Edit: To clarify, the VM starts and I see the Tianocore boot, but then it does not go anywhere

2nd Edit: Just tried 5.6.5 again and everything is working :shrug:

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

I can't confirm that with an AMD system, still boots fine with PCIe passthrough and 5.6.4.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

I tried both 5.6.5-arch3-1 and 5.6.6-arch1-1 but I get the exact same result as wth any 5.6.X version so far. The whole system freezes and the only way out is to turn off the power.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

Exact same issues with 5.6.7.arch1-1.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

What about 5.7-rc2?  Or you could bisect between 5.5 and 5.6 to find the causal commit.

Same issue with 5.6.8.arch1-1.

I probably would if I knew how to do that. I have tried to combine these two guides, but I have not succeeded:

Addendum: I should probably try again. I probably gave up too soon.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

The following assumes the base-devel group and git are installed and I recomend enabling Makepkg#Parallel_compilation to reduce build times

$ git clone git://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git --single-branch --branch "packages/linux"
$ cd packages/trunk
$ git checkout c6ae60ae7da579ef12eb9dedf59709d1071aa409 #5.5.13.arch2-1
$ cd ../..
$ cp -r packages/trunk linux-git
$ rm -rf packages
$ cd linux-git
# Edit replace the PKGBUILD with the one below
$ makepkg -rsi #This is to confirm 5.4 as built on your system does not have the issue.
You should not be prompted for any config changes.

This build may take a very long time.
Update bootloader for new kernel if needed

$ cd linux-git/src/linux
$ git checkout v5.6
$ cd ../..
$ makepkg -ersi #This is to confirm 5.6 as built on your system does have the issue select the default option for all prompted options

Start bisection

$ cd linux-git/src/linux/
$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good v5.5
$ git bisect bad v5.6
$ cd ../..
$ makepkg -ersif

Bisection loop

$ cd linux-git/src/linux/
$ git bisect $result #Substitue good or bad here
$ cd ../..
$ makepkg -ersif #Repeat these four lines and test the generated kernel until git has found the bad commit

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

Thanks for providing this comprehensive guide! I followed it exactly, but now I don't know how to continue:

  • linux-git-5.5.r0.gd5226fa6dbae-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz -> everything works fine

  • linux-git-5.6.r0.g7111951b8d49-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz -> system freeze when I try to launch the VM

  • linux-git-5.5.r7577.g9f68e3655aae-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz -> new error message when I try to launch the VM

Error starting domain: unsupported configuration: host doesn't support passthrough of host PCI devices

How should I treat this error message?

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

Not sure how to classify that either.  On the basis passthrough is not working call it bad.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

I think I screwed up. I get the new error message with any custom compiled kernel. Could it be related with this issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=252624?

But why do I run into this old issue, when I bisect between two newer kernel versions?

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

Good work finding the cause.  Start over the bisection again to get back to 9f68e3655aae

$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good v5.5
$ git bisect bad v5.6
$ git cherry-pick -n f5a68bb0752e0cf77c06f53f72258e7beb41381b # cherry-pick the fix
$ cd ../..
$ makepkg -ersif
$ cd linux-git/src/linux/
$ git reset --hard #undo the cherry-pick
$ git bisect $result #Substitue good or bad here
$ if ! git merge-base --is-ancestor f5a68bb0752e0cf77c06f53f72258e7beb41381b HEAD ;  then git cherry-pick -n f5a68bb0752e0cf77c06f53f72258e7beb41381b ; fi #test if the fix is not committed then cherry-pick the fix
$ cd ../..
$ makepkg -ersif #Repeat these six lines and test the generated kernel until git has found the bad commit

This does raise another question how did 5.5 work as it should have disabled IOMMU.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

5.5.13 only works when I install it from archive.archlinux.org, that's why I said I screwed up.

linux-git-5.5.r0.gd5226fa6dbae-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz also generates the new error message.

I will try the new build loop (with the cherry-picking) later on. Thanks again for the detailed instructions.

Edit: Cherry-picking the iommu fix did the trick. Now I can finally start searching for the bad commit!

git bisect bad:

f458d039db7e8518041db4169d657407e3217008 is the first bad commit
commit f458d039db7e8518041db4169d657407e3217008
Author: Suravee Suthikulpanit <suravee.suthikulpanit@amd.com>

    kvm: ioapic: Lazy update IOAPIC EOI

    In-kernel IOAPIC does not receive EOI with AMD SVM AVIC
    since the processor accelerate write to APIC EOI register and
    does not trap if the interrupt is edge-triggered.

    Workaround this by lazy check for pending APIC EOI at the time when
    setting new IOPIC irq, and update IOAPIC EOI if no pending APIC EOI.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

f458d039db7e8518041db4169d657407e3217008 reverts cleanly from 5.6 so as a cross check can you build 5.6.10.arch1-1 with just that commit reverted.

$ git clone git://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git --single-branch --branch "packages/linux"
$ cd packages/trunk

Edit the PKGBUILD adding the revert to prepare so it becomes:

prepare() {
  cd $_srcname

  echo "Setting version..."
  scripts/setlocalversion --save-scmversion
  echo "-$pkgrel" > localversion.10-pkgrel
  echo "${pkgbase#linux}" > localversion.20-pkgname

  git revert -n f458d039db7e8518041db4169d657407e3217008

  local src
  for src in "${source[@]}"; do
    src="${src%%::*}"
    src="${src##*/}"
    [[ $src = *.patch ]] || continue
    echo "Applying patch $src..."
    patch -Np1 < "../$src"
  done

  echo "Setting config..."
  cp ../config .config
  make olddefconfig

  make -s kernelrelease > version
  echo "Prepared $pkgbase version $(<version)"
}

Then

makepkg -rsi #If this build works it confirms that commit as the cause and there are no other commits involved.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

I'm having an issue with the same basic symptoms.    System freezes a few minutes after starting VM w/ passthough.

However, I am at linux 5.6.11-arch1-1 + libvirt 5.10.0-3.

I had noted during upgrade that the ovmf package was moved to extra and renamed "edk2-ovmf".

Reversion to my last known good package (ovmf-1:202002-1) fully resolves the issue.

Does anyone have information regarding the naming switch?   I believe it points to the same upstream codebase.

As the system locked up, I'm not sure what meaningful logs I can gather, I saw nothing significant in the libvirt log.

Happy to create a new thread or post additional configs or perform steps to debug.   I've had a stable system for some time and I avoid changing it as it had been working smoothly.

Re: 5.6 breaks PCI passthrough

Does anyone have information regarding the naming switch?   I believe it points to the same upstream codebase.

Not much, but this message was displayed during the upgrade:

(413/497) Install edk2-ovmf                    [##########################] 100%
The firmware location has changed to /usr/share/edk2-ovmf/. Symlinks are provided for backwards compatibility.
NOTE: To update the paths run 'virsh edit' on virtual machines that use OVMF.

This should be a different issue, though.
