Why can't I adjust the brightness of my screen in i3?

I just started using the i3 window manager in Arch Linux. It is working relatively well, however I cannot adjust the brightness of the screen with the buttons on my keyboard. This works on Windows 10, and on Arch with the MATE desktop environment. Why can't I adjust the brightness of my screen in i3? Are there any configuration files that I may need to edit?

Thanks

If xbacklight doesn't work for your hardware you can use xfce4-power-manager, that has an option to control the backlight via the keyboard and it also provides a slider when the systray icon is right-clicked. The mate-power-manager program probably also offers similar functionality.
