[SOLVED] Have arch installed in minimal partion

Hello,

I regularity tinker under the hood with Arch and have reinstalled several times, sometimes reinstalling Windows 7 to fix my USB stick. I wish to have a method which I could repair/reinstall Arch without having to use a USB stick. Is there a way I could have a copy of the Arch ISO taking up as little space as possible on my laptop, with me being able to install arch on most of my hard drive.

Thanks in advance!

The linux lad.

Yes.  How exactly depends on your bootloader.  Here, for example, is the relevant section of the syslinux page on the wiki.

But if you are reinstalling arch, you are doing it wrong.  There should never be a need to reinstall arch one it is installed.

Sidenote: please see our guidelines on how to post.  Then edit your first post to give this thread a title that relates to your question.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: [SOLVED] Have arch installed in minimal partion

I have a tendency to nuke arch after a month (if I'm lucky). I would keep backups, but the reinstall is part of the fun. You misunderstand me. I wish to have the iso as a second os, so if I have to repair, I could do that with ease. I travel a lot, and being able to fix my pc on the go would be a huge time-saver. Something like the Pop! os recovery mode (See here).

Re: [SOLVED] Have arch installed in minimal partion

But if you need to fix something, then your system is - by definition - unbootable.  And if the problem is in the bootloader, having the iso on the harddrive with the bootloader configured to load is for one of the options is not helpful.  If the problem is in the harddrive, then having the iso on the harddrive is also not helpful.  In fact, the range of scenarios in which the arch system would be unbootable, but the iso stored on the same harddrive would be is vanishingly small.

Just burn the iso on a cheap flash drive.

That said, I still just cant imagine what kinds of problems you are having that your system is unbootable on a monthly basis.  I suspect its far more likely that you are just skipping the opportunities to actually understand what is happening when the system boots, but some tools (DM/DE/etc) does not work the way you expect.

In any case, if your question really is just whether or not it's possible to store the iso on the hard disk, then you have your answer and you can mark the thread as [SOLVED].
