I am using Gnome (on Wayland) on console 1, and i3wm on Xorg on console 2. I switch between them using c-a-1 and c-a-2.
I tried to launch qemu on the i3 session, but was puzzled I got no display window. Not nearly as puzzled as when I flipped over to Gnome to use my browser, when I found my qemu window being proudly displayed in my Gnome session.
A little experimenting shows some GUIs make the session change, others don't. glxgears stays put on the Xorg side. I kind of expected that. pavucontrol, on the other hand, when started from i3 opens in Gnome.
My hunch is that this has something to do with some environmental variable not being set correctly, or perhaps it is a toolkit (gtk?) preferring the Gnome environment.
I'm not sure where to start looking, and don't even know where to start drilling down. Is this an i3 problem? Xorg? Gnome? Wayland? Gtk?
Anyone have insight into this?
