[SOLVED] AIDE disappeared from repo?

Hello everyone,

Yesterday I installed Arch on my laptop, and decided to use AIDE, so I installed it simply with pacman -S aide.

Today I wanted to install AIDE on another machine, but when I search for AIDE, the only result I get is "extra/lokalize 20.04.0-1". When using pacman -S I get: "error: target not found: aide".

Already tried pacman -Syy. I'm using the default mirrorlist, not edited (yet). Can it be that the repo pacman is trying to use is re-syncing, or worse, is AIDE removed from the repo?

Ok, thanks! So it is dropped because no one is maintaining it? That's unfortunate.

Any recommendations for an alternative?

I can't recommend any as I don't even know what it does.  Why do you need an alternative?  Does it still work?  If it works, use it ... and consider maintaining it in the AUR.

EDIT: upstream seems relatively active still - I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Re: [SOLVED] AIDE disappeared from repo?

I used it in the past on a Debian system, as an extra security measure (intrusion detection). Strange that it is dropped from the standard repo. I'll have a look into it, don't know anything about maintaining packages. Handy with bash, but that's it.

Thank you

Not really.  It seems it was only dropped as no one wanted to maintain it.  There's only so much TUs can do.  It's not uncommon for unpopular (in terms of use) packages to be dropped to the AUR.

You don't need any profciency to build and install the package from the AUR (where it currently is now).  And it doesn't take anything beyond some knowledge of BASH to maintain an AUR package.

There is, however, no need for you to volunteer to maintain the AUR package in order to use it.  Just build / install it from the AUR and be on your way.  But if you do use and like the package, it would be a good thing for you to do to adopt it.

Re: [SOLVED] AIDE disappeared from repo?

Thank you for the reply. I'm going to read into AUR, how things work etc. Could be my good deed! Always stayed away from AUR, didn't know if it was reliable/safe or not. But I'm going to find out.

Re: [SOLVED] AIDE disappeared from repo?

AUR packages should always be treated with some caution, but definitely don't avoid them all together.

Especially in this case: what's currently in the AUR was written by TUs.  It builds exactly what you've already trusted to be installed from the repos.  The concern with the AUR is definitely not that you are building the package yourself - you just need to be careful when the recipe (PKGBUILD) is provided by someone who doesn't know what they are doing and they do something harmful.

Re: [SOLVED] AIDE disappeared from repo?

I just read that the PKGBUILD and .install should be reviewed thoroughly, that shouldn't be too hard. Anyway, tomorrow begins my research. Still have a lot of questions, but I think they will be answered as I go along.
