[SOLVED] Tracking down i915 seg fault

Wondering if anyone could help give me a steer on this...

For context, I am not a Linux newbie, but I'm no expert either.

I am using a laptop with integrated Intel graphics. On that laptop I have installed Windows 10, Linux Mint and (obviously) Arch. Arch is where I am having an issue.

I have an application (with Linux and Windows versions) that is triggering a seg fault on Arch when I do certian things within it. The same thing does not happen on Windows and Linux Mint. Windows is irrelevant, but I am trying to work out why - specifically - it works on Mint and not Arch.

I have spoken to the developer, who tells me that the logs show it to be some kind of "UI crash". Because the developer cannot reproduce it, they cannot diagnose it. That said, they very strongly suspect that it is related to my graphics drivers.

My understanding is that the graphics driver is a kernel module (i915). I have tried the LTS kernel, and the zen kernel. Neither made any difference to the issue. I notice that Mint is using a much older kernel... maybe the developer has just writen it for that older kernel and has (not yet) had to update it for the newer kernel... would that make sense?

How can I diagnose this? What can I try? (if anything)

What application and what does the segfault look like? Can you see that in dmesg/your journal that specifically i915 leads to a dump? Which software versions run on mint in comparison? (particularly mesa)

Firstly, thank you for the reply.

The application is Houdini by SideFX software. It is VFX/3D modelling software.

No I absolutely do not know for certian that i915 is the cause of the issue. That is my own supposition based on the developer's response. It could be something else entirely.

I followed the link you gave, but there is no core dump for this process. Simply nothing listed. Having read that Wiki page, I don't understand why, as it states that Systemd's default behaviour is to save a core dump for all processes... also I checked the ulimit command and it is unlimited... this confuses me.

The version of the software running on Mint is the exact same as running on Arch. It's literally the same file - I boot into Mint and mount my Arch pratition and run it from there.

Not sure how helpful it will be, but I get this in the terminal

I'm rather meaning software versions for mesa (the userspace OpenGL implementation), there have been some issues in very recent mesa versions, update your system, ensure you are on mesa 20.0.7-2 at the minimum, should the issue persist despite that try falling back on the older OpenGL driver: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ver_(i965)

I have the package mesa 20.7.0-2 installed. So I think the answer to your question is yes - latest version installed.

I will try your suggestion about falling back on the old OpenGl driver as well.

Can you speculate on why I can't see the core dumps from this application? I know it won't help me, but it'll bug me not knowing why...

Falling back to the older OpenGl driver seems to fix it entirely! Wow. Thank you so much!

I guess it's a bug with the Iris driver? Or at least an incompatibility.

EDIT: Looking into it more, this makes total sense. Mint is using Mesa <20, where the default will be i965. The developer officially supports Ubuntu and derivatives, so that's why they have never seen this issue. My world makes sense again :-)
