[SOLVED] X server segmentation fault after (NVIDIA kernal parameter)

Note: the original title of this post was "Enabling Nvidia kernal parameter breaks X server".

$ uname -srm
Linux 5.6.12-arch1-1 x86_64

I'm running an Optimus laptop with Awesome-wm, with Nvidia PRIME enabled. Previously, it was working fine. I was able to run `nvidia-prime vkcube` successfully, and `nvidia-smi` confirmed that my GPU was running the Vulkan cube demo. I also had `picom` running, but it was being run by the Intel integrated graphics card, as expected.

However, there was bad screen tearing, so I followed this/this, not realising it was only relevant for the "Use NVIDIA graphics only" section. (I was previously using this setup, but I'm now using PRIME instead.)

Literally ALL I did was go to `/etc/default/grub` and change

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3"

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 nvidia-drm.modeset=1"

and then running

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

and rebooting.

When trying to `startx` I got this error: (note: I think this was it. This is an error that I get when trying to reconstruct what I did earlier.)

I'm not 100% sure that these were exactly the same outputs that I got when I ran these commands for the first time. I did reinstall `nvidia` at some point after I started getting these errors. In any case, these are the errors I get now when I en/disable `nvidia-drm.modeset=1`.

I tried enabling `nvidia-drm.modeset=1` again and now I get this `startx` error instead (which I think was more likely the original startx error):

Looks like a bug in mesa, which version are you on here? There seems to have been an emergency bugfix in 20.0.7-2 do you have that? Alternatively try to move to the older but more mature libGL implementation: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … ver_(i965)
