USB mic stops working after a few seconds

I've got a USB mic that gets picked up when plugged in, but then stops picking up vocal signal after about 30 seconds.  The devices still shows up in lsusb and arecord -l, as well as in /proc/asound/, etc, but it stops taking a signal.  Mixers all show the device as unmuted.  I'm baffled.

I've got ALSA with PulseAudio (because of some hard deps) on the system.  If figure it might be a config thing?  This isn't a problem on my system without Pulse (just ALSA), so does it have something to do with Pulse?  I'm out of my depth, at this point.

Thoughts?

arecord -l
amixer -c0 #adjust this to match the index of the mic
pacmd list-cards

pacmd list-source-outputs

What happens is in pavucontrol, for example, under Input Devices, the VU meter shows sound being picked up.  Then, after a few seconds, it freezes.  No sound.  The mic's onboard monitor still picks up sound, but nothing through USB.  But, the devices still shows up, as you can see from the above messages.  Curious.

I have an interesting update.

When I unplug my graphics tablet, the problem disappears with the mic.  Is this a matter of some sort of conflict?  I'll try a few things, while I wait for your reply.

UPDATE:

It's the same situation, no matter which USB port I use.  I tried all of them.  When the graphics tablet is connected, the mic freezes after a few seconds of being plugged in.
