NVIDIA driver not loading after upgrade and reboot

Upgraded Arch, which fixed `mesa` issues I was having. Before rebooting, I ran

prime-run vkcube

and it worked normally. After rebooting, though, NVIDIA stopped working.

$ nvidia-smi
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.
$ nvidia-settings

Re: NVIDIA driver not loading after upgrade and reboot

You're on the wrong kernel, you should be on 5.6.13 with that nvidia package version. If

pacman -Q linux
uname -r

are both on 5.6.12 that means your mirror is outdated, switch to an actively syncing one https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mi … ng_mirrors

If they don't then you likely didn't have the boot partition mounted in which case you should do so and rerun the update.

If you want to be more independent of syncing/mirror issues like these consider switching to nvidia-dkms which will rebuild the nvidia module locally on your system for the installed kernels.

Re: NVIDIA driver not loading after upgrade and reboot

I had the exact same issue and upgrading to the latest kernel solved it. Thanks a lot for the quick response!

On a side note, will the Reflector script (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Reflector) prevent issues like these?

Re: NVIDIA driver not loading after upgrade and reboot

It should help, but as far as I know it also isn't entirely failsafe and can sometimes select mirrors that are fast and synced but might fall off for whatever reason. But it's definitely better than for example just using the default mirror list as provided on the ISO/by the pacman-mirrorlist package.

Re: NVIDIA driver not loading after upgrade and reboot

Noob question, but how exactly do you mount the boot partition?

Following this, I've tried both

$ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /boot

and

$ sudo mount /dev/sda1 /efi

before running

$ sudo pacman -Syu

but that doesn't work.

EDIT:

From this page:

jasonwryan wrote:

It is your choice where you mount your ESP. I prefer /mnt/boot because it simplifies things.

How exactly does Arch/pacman know which directory the boot files are at?

EDIT 2:

Also, why do the "System maintenance", "Kernel", or most importantly, the "Pacman" wiki pages not mention anything about mounting the boot partition (unless I am blind)? I've read on the forums that this is a common noob mistake, but I've never read about this issue on the wiki.

Re: NVIDIA driver not loading after upgrade and reboot

That depends on what you did to set up the system. If you used systemd-boot it's safest to mount it to /boot so that you are sure kernel images are being written. If you use GRUB it doesn't really matter (unless you had that mounted to /boot, written the kernel images to /boot and configured GRUB to boot from there, then you have to have it mounted still (or reconfigure GRUB to boot from the /boot directory on your / partition))

You'll also want to explicitly reinstall the linux package (or run mkinitcpio -p linux )  to ensure mkinitcpio is triggered after having mounted the partition.

And to reiterate all of this assumes that you indeed have the issue that pacman -Q linux and uname don't mach. If both point to 5.6.12 then you're simply on an outdated mirror.

Edit: It doesn't, the files are written to /boot by default, whether that's a mountpoint of a partition or just a directory, doesn't matter to pacman, this depends on you setting this up correctly.

Re: NVIDIA driver not loading after upgrade and reboot

The mirror I was using was indeed out of date! I changed to a different mirror and the Linux kernel has now been updated big_smile

But something weird happened: after checking here, I commented out all but one mirror so that `/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist` was

# Server list generated by rankmirrors on 2020-05-17

## Arch Linux repository mirrorlist

#Server = http://archlinux.mirror.digitalpacific.com.au/$repo/os/$arch
#Server = https://syd.mirror.rackspace.com/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch
#Server = http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch

#Server = https://archlinux.mirror.digitalpacific.com.au/$repo/os/$arch
#Server = http://ftp.swin.edu.au/archlinux/$repo/os/$arch

to make sure I was using a mirror (http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/archlinux/) listed under "Successfully Syncing Mirrors". I ran `sudo pacman -Syu`, and it said everything was up to date. Turns out it wasn't. But after using http://ftp.swin.edu.au/archlinux/ instead, it downloaded the new kernel?? So are those mirrors up to date or not?

Besides, the other servers in my mirror list are listed under "Successfully Syncing Mirrors" anyway.

I suppose you have to have already mounted ESP to `/boot` before running `sudo pacman -Syu` for pacman to actually download the relevant packages?

EDIT:

The mirror page says:

All data on this page reflects the status of the mirrors within the last 24 hours.

It's probably just this.

That'd be best yes, but pacman will download and install packages regardless it doesn't make a distinction here (and in fact the process that actually ends up writing to /boot is mkinitcpio but that's a technicality) you need to ensure that the system is in a state where all files land at their correct position (otherwise the kernel images will land in the /boot directory on your root partition instead of on the ESP). If you've indeed set up the system in a way that the kernel images must be present on the ESP then you are doing yourself a lot of favors by simply adding that to your fstab so that you don't accidentally forget to have it mounted.
