[SOLVED] PRIME Multihead - Cannot access outputs

See reply

Hi all,

I have tried my hardest to never have to post another question on here but even after wiki reading I'm clueless on what to search next to solve this issue so here it is:

  • I am using an Optimus laptop (MSI GE72 MVR) which has on-board Intel graphics and a GTX 1070.

  • I am trying to display my laptop as my first monitor (1080p, 120Hz), and display an external monitor (1080p, 144Hz) connected via DP as the second monitor. Xinerama-like behaviour via randr functionality is what I'm aiming for as read in the wiki.

  • I want to use my integrated GPU for both screens and the nVidia card for GPU offloading. This is already set up and working.

  • My laptop displays the screen, whilst my second monitor displays nothing. See below for the files/outputs relevant to the current status:

I'm particularly unsure about any changes I've made to my xorg.conf. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] PRIME Multihead - Cannot access outputs

It appears that I need to take a step back and focus on correctly setting up my hybrid graphics, so I can use two monitors and only use my dedicated GPU for on-demand render offloading.

All other outputs i.e. HDMI, DP etc. are tied to the dedicated GPU. When I run xrandr without any xorg.conf, it shows them and they are disconnected.

I then simplified my Xorg conf to only configure the bare minimum for PRIME render offloading:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "iGPU"
    Option "AllowNVIDIAGPUScreens"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"iGPU"
	Driver "Intel"
	BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "iGPU"
    Device "iGPU"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"dGPU"
	Driver "nvidia"
	BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

and now xrandr outputs the following:

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767

xrandr --listproviders

Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x45 cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 4 outputs: 2 associated providers: 0 name:Intel
Provider 1: id: 0x220 cap: 0x0 crtcs: 0 outputs: 0 associated providers: 0 name:NVIDIA-G0

It correctly says NVIDIA-G0, but states that there are no outputs - I'm not sure whether this is correct.

When I reverse-prime I get the following:
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource NVIDIA-G0 Intel

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 35 (RRSetProviderOutputSource)
  Value in failed request: 0x220
Serial number of failed request: 16
Current serial number in output stream: 17

Same issue when trying with modesetting. How do I access my other outputs?

Re: [SOLVED] PRIME Multihead - Cannot access outputs

I am new here but I think I understand your problem very well. I had the same issue on a new minimal install of Arch Linux. Here's how I was able to solve it.

1) Copy the following code to  /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "intel"
    MatchDriver "i915"
    Driver "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
Option "PrimaryGPU" "yes" #This is important
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia/xorg"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection

2) Add the following to ~/.xinitrc or your DM startup script

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

3) Remove the xorg.conf file. (after saving a backup)

4) Restart the Xserver. (log out and log in or reboot).

Now you should be able to use your HDMI output connected to dGPU as well as your laptop screen. The dGPU will be the primary GPU. If you want to use Intel, change "PrimaryGPU" option to "no". However, if you use Intel, the HDMI output is not recognized. Trying reverse PRIME gives me the same error. Right now, when I use a second monitor, I use the dGPU and while mobile, use Intel. Many seem to have the same issue. This post was helpful.

These are the packages I have:

nvidia 440.82
nvidia-prime 1.0
nvidia-settings 440.82

Edit: I am using the modesetting driver. I think PRIME works well with the modesetting driver.

Thank you very much Pax this worked immediately!

Time to set up some scripts to manage everything automatically smile
