[Solved] Steam Startup Issue (breakpad exception)

I'm getting the output...

Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1589513816)

...on Steam launch.

The wiki troubleshooting article suggests that this is due to being an Nvidia user (which I am) not having the 32 bit drivers installed (which I do) and that both the 64 bit and 32 bit versions must match (which they do not). My 64 bit driver is currently at 440.82-16, while my 32 bit driver (from the lib32-nvidia-utils package) is over a month behind at version 440.82-1. This would certainly explain Steam failing to launch.

I hesitate to flag the package as out-of-date, however, as a quick look at Nvidia's website shows the "latest" 32 bit Linux drivers at version 390.1320 from November of 2019 and the Arch repos are way past these. This makes it fairly clear to me that I don't know where to find "upstream" for these drivers, and I have no way of verifying if they're actually out-of-date or not. Also, if these two sets of drivers have been out of sync for over a month now, as would appear to be the case, why am I not seeing any mention of issues on the forums? Did all the Steam users just roll back their 64 bit drivers or am I missing something?

Re: [Solved] Steam Startup Issue (breakpad exception)

Please do not flag put of date, as your assessment is incorrect. 440.82 is the Nvidia version, the -16 and -1 are the version of the Arch package. Every time a maintainer changes the package without pulling in a new upstream version, this counter is being incremented, so pacman knows there is something new. That means the 64bit package has been touched 15 times, while the 32 bit packe hasn't.

You're also wrong about a 32 bit driver. There is no 32 bit driver, as there is no 32 bit Arch. There is only a 32 bit version of the nvidia-utils package. Any attempt to actually install a 32 bit driver will most likely fail.

I have no solution at this point, but I hope this clarifies some things.

Ok, this makes sense now. Thanks for the explanation.

So what you're saying is that lib32-nvidia-utils does not provide the 32 bit vulkan driver needed by Steam to run?

Oops... the vulcan driver, indeed. I only thought about the nvidia driver and confused myself in the process.

Re: [Solved] Steam Startup Issue (breakpad exception)

Please post the full output leading to that last line. And to verify your 32bit drivers work correctly try and post

glxinfo32 -B #Needs lib32-mesa-demos

And. of course, when I get the time to come back to the issue, it's magically corrected itself and all is working fine. I have, to my knowledge, done nothing that would have influenced the situation one way or the other and am left scratching my head with a suddenly working Steam install. I'll mark as solved, I guess.

Maybe the game was broken and has been fixed. Maybe Proton was broken and has been fixed.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop!
