Arch very slow since recent update [SOLVED]

Hi,

Around April 23rd I started having serious performance issues with Arch. Basically overnight, there is a noticeable lag when typing words in an IDE, like Visual Studio code for example. The lag is present when spawing programs, switching windows, even running pacman upgrades and other shell programs.

I've tried logging in before X starts in the tty, and it seems as slow there as in X.

I've downgraded all my packages using the Arch Archive to April 15th, and it seems to help things a little, but it's still quite slow. mplayer still displays a warning that my PC is too slow to play films that I used to play just fine before.

I'm posting here asking for advice on troubleshooting this problem as I'm stumped as to what is going on. When I run top things look normal, no processes hogging resources. But the main issue seems to be lag. The CPU fan isn't on more than usual for example.

I have a Dell XPS 9350 and I'm using XMonad.

If downgrading "all your packages" didn't solve this, then you might want to...

1. create a new user and see if some config has been broken.

2. use some live CD Linux to see if it's just your hardware.

3. Memtest, test the HDD for errors. Clean the fans.

Might be related to this xps bug where clock is stuck at 800Mhz?

There was a thread about this not too long ago also - worth checking if it's the same issue.

Thanks for the tip CarbonChauvinist. I have now determined that the issue is my CPU is limited to the min frequency, 400MHz. Unfortunately, the fix in the linked thread of disconnecting the battery didn't work.

That makes sense since the frequency isn't limited on Windows 10.

I've tried disabling the intel_pstate driver by adding 'intel_pstate=disable' to my kernel cmd line with no effect. Trying to change the min frequency by using cpupower also doesn't work.

I also tried using msr tools to set a register to 0, as mentioned here and that also didn't work.

So it seems like some other kind of bug. I can't find anything else on Google talking about this issue.

At this stage I guess I'll ask on Dell's forums for support directly. The bug is either in Linux itself or with the hardware.

Thanks for the tip Seth, but I don't think that's relevant here. I don't mount the EFI partition in Linux at all. I manually choose to boot Arch every time by pressing F12 on boot.

I only realized that I'm not mounting the EFI partition recently, when trying to do a firmware upgrade to fix this issue. Perhaps it's related to fwupd, but I doubt it.

At this stage I'm considering simply reinstalling Arch from scratch, since nobody seems to have any ideas on debugging it, and I need this laptop for work.

I posted on the Dell forums and no response either. So much for the "Developer Edition" laptop having good Linux support!

The relevant part here is that if windows is hibernating (which is the default, even when you shut down), that will leave your HW in an undefined state and can very well prevent the CU from switching it's power state.

Thanks to all of you for your help! I have disabled both Hibernation and Fast Boot and I've rebooted normally and the problem persists. I'll give that microcode page a read though thanks!

That fixed it! Omg I can't thank you enough. I've been without my main workstation for weeks. Seriously you're a life saver!

I guess I can live without thermald, but is there a way I can configure thermald so it behaves?
