Can you run quake 1 on your Arch Linux?
There is a port called "darkplaces", but it doesn't work on old graphics card like Matrox (quake2 and few other games work correctly)
I wanted to run glquake, but it has problem with opening sound device (/dev/dsp) - is it related to ALSA? Other programs use /dev/dsp and work...
Is there any other OpenGL port than glquake and darkplaces?

Host_Init
FindFile: can't find gfx/pop.lmp
Playing shareware version.
FindFile: can't find gfx.wad
W_LoadWadFile: couldn't load gfx.wad
and darkplaces have wrong textures for my card, a intel 945
i like an engine much like the original quake, so for now its tyrquake until i can get the sound to work
