[SOLVED] x server crashes due to libnettle.so.7 missing

I'm having trouble booting without issues lately, when xfce starts xorg I get an error:

/usr/lib/Xorg: error while loading shared libraries: libnettle.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

When I look at my nettle installation I have version 3.6 installed, with the file libnettle.so.8 in /usr/lib
Since I'm missing libnettle.so.7 I use downgrade to install version 3.5.1 instead, now I can run startxfce4 successfully and get to my desktop.
But the problem is still that now I have the old version of the libnettle file, and programs like vscode don't start properly.

I start getting the same error from vscode and others instead stating that now my libnettle for 3.6 is missing.

electron7: error while loading shared libraries: libnettle.so.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So what I have to do now is to boot -> error at xorg start -> downgrade nettle -> startxfce4 -> upgrade nettle to 3.6 again -> start programs like vscode normally.
Any ideas on how to solve this?

Partial updates are not supported. Update your entire system.

I have run yay -Syu and yay -Syua multiple times since the issue started, and I've never (at least intentionally) done a partial update.

Install pax-utils and run lddtree /usr/lib/Xorg

So Xorg itself is linked to the old libnettle. What xorg-server package do you have installed?

Re: [SOLVED] x server crashes due to libnettle.so.7 missing

So you have an old package you installed from the AUR. It's your responsibility to rebuild non-native packages.

Ah yes, I see now that the package including the bug fix hasn't been updated to carry the nettle update.
Okay, I'll just hang about and I'm sure the maintainer will update it soon enough.

There's nothing for the maintainer to update. It's squarely on your shoulders.

Ah right, the xorg package just picks up the nettle update. Well thanks for your help!

Re: [SOLVED] x server crashes due to libnettle.so.7 missing

Hmm, okay there is still an issue remaining. Now I can correctly boot and startxfce4 starts up xorg properly, but I end up at a black desktop with only my cursor visible.
If I jump between the ttys with ctrl+alt+F2 and back to ctrl+alt+F1, then my desktop shows up as it should.

Could this be related to my original issue somehow?

Without any details, how could anyone answer that?

In any event, it is a separate issue. Mark this as solved and create a new thread with logs, details of your setup etc: How To Ask Questions The Smart Way
