Best practice for volume and backlight control

Hi everyone,
Should I use acpid or i3config?
What do you think is the best solution?

But that is the problem with these types of forum topics: it would actually be useful if you said WHY it is a "better" solution and then at least we could have a discussion. Just having a pissing match with unstated goals is just boring; it's called "bike-shedding".

So.. what thing(s) make acpid a "better" solution for you compared to other ways of turning the volume up or down?

Totally agree with you, but I'm italian and my english isn't really good..
Btw, I personally think acpid is a better solution for few reasons:
1. Works out of X;
2. Config file remain more clean;
3. If you use a bind u need to specify a --no-startup-id and I'm not really comfortable about it

I'm not an i3 expert by any stretch, but --no-startup-id is harmless, it just instructs the launcher to not show a "waiting" mouse cursor and wait for a window to open; it's meant for non-windowed actions/applications/scripts (such as the ones we're talking about: changing volume, etc.) that are not specific to a given workspace. In fact, you can argue that --no-startup-id is actually "cleaner" and makes i3 do "less" when running that bindsym.

As for "cleaner configs" - you are opening a can of worms there, since that is entirely subjective: for example, it's a valid counter-argument to say that having all configuration in a single file is "cleaner" compared to spreading it across multiple systems/configurations. And let's not forget that there are people out there that actually say that Perl syntax/configs are "clean" whereas to me it looks like someone sat on a keyboard.

Having said all this, it's Arch Linux' philosophy that nobody gives a f*k and you should do what you "feel" works best for you. There'll be people that agree with you and those that may agree with me, but it's all irrelevant. Now, if you were to ask a question like "what is the fastest/least CPU intensive/most likely to succeed, etc., you will get those arguments here, no problem. But matters of taste are kind of taboo.

I use volumeicon for volume and xfce4-power-manager for backlight for display and for keyboard and playerctl for media keys.
