Error booting Arch Linux install CD

I am trying to install Arch Linux 2020.06.01.  My PC is configured to boot in UEFI mode.  The CD starts to boot, I get an initial selection screen and I select Arch Linux archiso x86_64 UEFI CD.  The screen goes blank for several seconds and then I get this message:
Error loading \EFI\archiso\vmlinuz.efi: Device error
Failed to execute Arch Linux archiso x86_64 UEFI CD (\EFI\archiso\vmlinuz.efi):
Device Error

and then a blue screen that says:
Failed to start loader.efi:  (7) Device Error

I have checked the signature of the .iso download file.  I've tried burning 2 CDs using different CD burning programs and in each case had it verify the burned image.

Browsing the CD or the .iso image file I see that the only file in the \EFI\ARCHISO directory is EFIBOOT.IMG.
The file \EFI\archiso\vmlinuz.efi doesn't seem to exist.

I can boot other CDs in UEFI mode on this PC without problem.

Any suggestions?

Re: Error booting Arch Linux install CD

Not a direct solution, but likely the simplest would be to try last months iso.

Re: Error booting Arch Linux install CD

I tried the 2020.05.01 version.  Same problem.
Also tried the 2020.04.01 version.  Same problem.

I tried some install CD's or DVD from some other distros, Artix, PCLinuxOS, Q4OS, and those booted fine.

I tried formatting a USB stick FAT32 and copied all the files from the .iso onto the stick.  This is usually sufficient to create a bootable USB stick in UEFI mode.  I insert the USB stick, hit F10 during POST to bring up the boot menu, select the UEFI USB stick and I get a screen with 2 selections:
  EFI Default Loader
  Reboot Into Firmware Interface

EFI Default Loader just brings up the screen again.  The other option takes me into BIOS setup.

I have several other UEFI USB sticks that boot fine on this machine.  What is unique about the Arch installer that makes it so hard to even get off the ground?

If it helps, this is an Intel DH77KC motherboard with an Ivy Bridge i5 processor, 4GB of memory, and 2 SATA drives in a RAID0 configuration.

Any suggestions?

Re: Error booting Arch Linux install CD

Arch's iso is a hybrid iso. The contents meant for USB sticks are not necessarily available in the ISO 9660 file system. Archiso's boot entry for USB sticks is "Arch Linux archiso x86_64 UEFI USB" while the one for optical discs is "Arch Linux archiso x86_64 UEFI CD". As can be seen from your error, you have the wrong one.

How did you copy the files? The official procedure should have worked.

Open loader/entries/archiso-x86_64.conf and make sure it matches the https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/ … 4-usb.conf template. Also make sure all the referenced files exist.

Re: Error booting Arch Linux install CD

If your machine can boot a usb / flash drive, why bother with the CDs.  As noted above, just 'burn' the image to the USB.

How did you write the image to the stick?

Re: Error booting Arch Linux install CD

I obviously have a lot to learn about creating a bootable USB flash drive. I tried using USBwriter, as suggested by https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … _USBwriter, and now the USB stick boots.  Thanks for the pointer nl6720.
