Hi, I have just purchased a tp-link TL-WN823N.
When I plug it into my system, it works, but after a reboot it doesn't work. I have to unplug and re-plug it to get it working.
Here's the system details:
$ cat /proc/version

Check/post your dmesg and journal for error messages:
sudo journalctl -bOffline
The output from dmesg is:
[ 767.595204] wlp0s20u2: authenticate with 7e:46:85:01:**:**
[ 767.603396] wlp0s20u2: send auth to 7e:46:85:01:**:** (try 1/3)

This needs more context, please post an entire journalctl log. FWIW realtek wifi chips are somewhat notorious for issues like this, but there should've been betterment in that regard, might also be an issue with https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … domization . But that's just a shot in the dark at this point.

That's truncated and incomplete, the sudo in my example command was intentional add in a --no-pager or redirect into a file, but if I'm reading that right you seem to be generally truncating the journal heavily as a global setting. That is going to bite you when you run into actual issues you need to debug (as is being demonstrated here).

Hi, for the time being, it's solved after I installed the 8192eu-dkms 83.b06d8b8-1 driver. Although lscpi -k continuously shows the driver
r8169is being used, but
lsmod | grep 8192shows
8192eu 1601536 0
cfg80211 897024 4 8192eu,mt7601u,mac80211,rtl8xxxuNow it's working just fine...

r8169 is your ethernet driver and not the usb wifi one.
If you are fine with this solution instead of trying to identify the issue with the in kernel driver, please mark the thread as [SOLVED] by editing the title.

Yes, the driver is ethernet driver
But I found out that the right driver for the module used by the adapter was rtl8xxxu.
Whenever I connect that adapter to the system, and then boot the system with the adapter plugged in, it doesn't work.
For making the adapter work, strangely this works so far:
# rmmod rtl8xxxu ; modprobe rtl8xxxuI have tested the above solutions multiple times before posting, and this method works flawlessly, but probably this is a very bad practice, and not the real solution...
Caveats:
1. I noticed that the wireless range is quite short. If I move my phone (running hotspot) a couple of feet away, the link quality drops to 20 - 30 from 70! I really needed to keep the phone within 6 inches or so to get 70/70 signal level!
2. The adapter gets very hot with rtl8xxxu.
3: Invalid misc > 0
-------------------------
Many people are also facing such problems in other distributions as well:
1. TP-LINK TL-WN822N Wifi Usb Adpater Has Very Low Range in My Kali 2017.3
2. problem with rtl8xxxu in driver TP-LINK TL-WN822N Wifi Usb
-------------------------
In short, the solution was to install the mange's 8192eu driver:
8192eu-dkms 83.b06d8b8-1

I am facing the same problem and the solution till the last update. Last update has broken this workaround solution.
