How to make the screen not streched on a certain resolution?

Im on a 1280x1024 monitor, and i made a new 1280x720 resolution since it wasnt avaliable in the display settings, so i made the resolution myself. Now, when i output the monitor to 1280x720, its streched across the entire monitor. I want to make it so that it doesnt do that, and instead there are those black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, and again not streched. There are no options to do that in the display settings. How do i do it?

Ideally by disabling the stretch in the monitor OSD.

Otherwise it somewhat depends on the driver and output.
nvidia-settings has a powerful viewport transformation in the advanced section of the X Server Display Config, for other drivers try the underscan feature: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xr … n_property (you want to use it w/ the 1280x1024 resolution, because your monitor is going to scale up whatever you use anyway)

This sounds like an xy-question, though. Why do you want to do this in the first place?

Alright. Im actually on a AMD GPU, and i dont really know how to disable the stretch in the monitor OSD, can you tell me how to do that?
Also I want to do this for well, recording and yes, I know even though its stretched the recording isnt, i just want to make it a bit more comfortable for me. I am on a 5:4 1280x1024 monitor.

That depends on your monitor, they usually have a bunch of buttons and sometimes a wheel to navigate you through an OSD where you can configure how they shall handle non-native resolutions (stretch, maintain aspect, keep the original resolution, …)

If you manipulate the X11 server to add black bars to the framebuffer that's send to the screen, some framegrabber would most likely record those as well.

Update: Since my monitors buttons are broken, i cant really do anything with the monitor, however, some people told me that i can set the "display area" of xrandr. Now, the only question is, how do i do that?

Again, I'm less than sure that this will not result in you recording the black borders as well.
