Two Intel Systems Parallel Crash Linux 5.7

Hi,

this morning two of my servers vanished from the network for hours. It's a server with an Intel E3-1220L v2 (A) and a brand new Intel NUC (B) with 10th gen i5.
Unit A ran 5.7.4-arch1-1 and unit B linux-5.7.6.arch1-1.

At around 2:41 in the morning both units suffered a kernel panic. Both units were still functional (except networking) and did not need a reset.

There is is pretty similiar issue here, but it seems it's more related to amdgpu issues. This obviously does not apply with my setup.

Both units were under heavy network load. At the time unit B received data from A at around 1 Gbits for at least 40 minutes. They are in the same subnet and connected through a "dumb" gigabit switch.

I have no clue what's going on here. Is this is pure kernel related issue?

There have been reports of problems with recent intel microcode releases on some systems.

Do you have microcode loading configured ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

I find it interesting that they failed with the same error within seconds of each other.  Are their clocks both set using NTP? (IOW, are their clocks synchronized?)

Something triggered these failures. 
Were they synchronous or asynchronous? (That is why I ask about clock settings). 
Do they work together on the same problem?
Are they exposed to the Internet? (Could this be an attack?  There was an apparent 12 second lag)

Yes, I have installed the microcode package. It seems that most people have issues with version 20200609-X, I am on 20200616-1. This version seems to fix this issue. So I suspect this is not the problem in my case. But thanks for the hint.

I did not see any crashes since I created this thread and as I am unable to reproduce/trigger it I think I will stay on the default kernel for now. But thanks for the hint.

Something triggered these failures. 
Were they synchronous or asynchronous? (That is why I ask about clock settings).

Yes, they both have the systemd ntpd service active and running.

Unit A provides samba shares, that unit B accessed with full bandwith saturation (1 Gbits) during the crash. Unit B did only read operations during that time.

Both units have services exposed to the internet, but they are mainly used for personal things and not publicy "known". I have netdata running on all nodes and my OPNsense firewall and did not see any increase in traffic volume or pps before or after the crash. I don't think this was an attack. But anyway, thanks, good point.
