Re: System randomly freeze

Hanging on 5.7.3. Even with Kernel parameters.
I rollback to 5.8-rc1

Did you have such messages before the upgrade to 5.7?

Re: System randomly freeze

You can install linux-lts along side linux,  linux-lts is currently on 5.4.47.

Already done. It works well indeed, but I'm looking a "long-term" solution.

Re: System randomly freeze

Does linux-lts produce the messages I mentioned in post #27?
Edit:
5.7.4 has a timing related change https://cdn.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel … eLog-5.7.4 however that commit was already in 5.8-rc1 so I doubt it will help.

Re: System randomly freeze

When you boot linux-lts does dmesg contain messages like:

04:04:49 Reina kernel: tsc: Marking TSC unstable due to clocksource watchdog
04:04:49 Reina kernel: TSC found unstable after boot, most likely due to broken BIOS. Use 'tsc=unstable'.

Re: System randomly freeze

Kernel 5.7 seems to be quite a mess. Besides my desktop PC is freezing with that kernel every few hours without (error) message I also have MacBook Pro 2015 with Linux installed. While the PC is basically AMD based (CPU + GPU as already mentioned earlier) the Mac is Intel-only. Worked for 4 years without issue. Now it boots half of the services and then just stops. But as systemd starts services in parallel it's always the output of the latest service started I can see (which is always a different one) and then nothing more happens. So no login possible and also sshd isn't started at that point. So I had to boot from an Archlinux recovery USB stick and downgraded to "linux" and "linux-headers" packages to 5.6.4 (I left "intel-ucode" at the latest version this time). Now everything is fine again. I know it doesn't help that much as I have again no error logs but I wanted to mention it. So in my case it doesn't seems to be AMDGPU related.

Edit: The funny thing is that my MacBook Pro 2011 (or 2012) seems work without issue with kernel 5.7.2/5.7.4 (at least it hasn't the booting issue of the MBP 2015 mentioned above). But I've to check if it freezes after a few hours like my desktop PC.

Re: System randomly freeze

For the interested ones: Yesterday I was adventurous and updated my PC to kernel 5.7.5. I runs for 24 hrs now without issues. That looks promising.  5.7.2/5.7.4 normally freezes a at least once in that time frame. But my MacBook Pro 2015 with Linux and kernel 5.7.5 still don't boot properly as mentioned in my previous post. But I guess that's a different issue. Time will tell ;-)

Re: System randomly freeze

I just saw this error while checking "dmesg" output:

[84543.736022] [drm:dpcd_set_source_specific_data [amdgpu]] *ERROR* Error in DP aux read transaction, not writing source specific data
[84545.295576] [drm] enabling link 2 failed: 15

No idea what that means ;-) But PC is still running :-)

No virtual box in use. I'm using KVM. That's working perfectly fine. I use 5.7.5 for a few days now without issues. So at least for my PC (which runs 24/7) the issue seems to be solved.

Re: System randomly freeze

Just wanted to chime in as I have been experiencing something very similar for the last few months, depite my system being rock-stable before that. However since around april I am getting random freezes, typically once a week.

CPU: Ryzen 2600
MB: MSI B450I Gaming Plus AC
GPU: Gigabyte RX580
RAM: Patriot Viper DDR4 3200 32GB

Usually freezes would manifest with a similar TSC clock error as OP, followed with PCIe errors on the GPU device:

Jun 08 11:01:37 furusato kernel: pcieport 0000:00:03.1: AER: [12] Timeout

The system would work normally for ~1-2 minutes after these messages and then freeze: display turns black, the LED on my GPU blinks red while it repeatedly spins its fans on and off, and the CPU debug led of my motherboard turns white.

I have tried various kernel options:

  • "tsc=unstable" removes the TSC clock error message, but the freeze still happens.

  • "pcie_aspm=off" removes the PCIe Bus Error message, but the freeze occurs nonetheless.

I have also tried lowering my RAM speed from 3200 to 2600, and increasing the CAS, to no effect. Also installed and enabled amd-ucode, to no avail.

Latest crash happened today with 5.7.6. I will give a try to linux-lts to see if things are better with it.

I have the same issue with kernel 5.7 to 5.8rc3 on my laptop with ryzen 4500U. Just downgraded to kernel 5.6.9. Will report if it fix the freeze.

Re: System randomly freeze

I have two old laptops with ATI cards using radeon drivers.

I do not update the kernel frequently at each release because in the past I had issues and usually I stick with a version and update every 3/4 months.

I decided to update from 5.6.15 to 5.7.5 and it has been a mess. Getting freezes on both laptops, especially one in particular that can't last more than 20 minutes without a freeze.

I decided to stick to linux-lts and update every 7/8 months because I'm sick of having these troubles. Just tried previous version and 5.4.45 is not causing any issue. Tested if for hours.

Solved for me.

Please mark the thread solved by editing the first post and prepending [SOLVED] to the title.
Please also mark your upstream bug reports the same so developers do not waste time on the issue.

The issue is not solved for a lot of people and since the bug isn't fixed at all I will not put the solved tag.
Changing your MB + CPU isn't a fix

Re: System randomly freeze

Solved might not be the best term and closed can not be used but as you can no longer reproduce the issue I was suggesting marking it so others would not spend time on the issue.

You could at least inform upstream that you can no longer reproduce the issue on your new hardware,  so it would appear the issue was not the AMD GPU
See https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/ … #follow-up

Re: System randomly freeze

There are still people affected by this issue, I got a freeze not earlier than yesterday so I would appreciate if others kept spending time on this. wink

It would also be interesting to be able to pinpoint it to a specific component - does it happen with an AMD CPU, AMD GPU, or just both? Automne, you just replaced your CPU but what GPU are you now using?

If this thread was closed you could start you own or there is the somewhat similar https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=256937
Have you contacted the kernel clocksource developers?  Could you reproduce the findings of post #23 or have you bisected between 5.6 and 5.7 to find the cause?

Why open another thread for the very same issue and spread the information? And the one you link is definitely a different issue.

I did something similar to #23, to no avail. It seems like the nct clock messages are just a side-effect of the actual issue. I have thought about bisecting but with an average of 1 week between freezes for me that does not seem very reasonable.

I could also see this issue with 5.6. At the moment I am running 5.4 LTS, will need more uptime to know whether it is good or not.

Without a known good version bisection is not viable anyway.  Has the system always had the issue since you installed arch on it?
Edit:
Your motherboard only has one PCIE slot so you can not test with a different one.
Have you replaced either the GPU,  mainboard or CPU?
