Hi to all,
on my laptop vlc cannot accelerate hardware some avi mpeg videos that are played in jerky mode.
When this problem happens I get the following output on the console from which I've launched vlc:
VLC media player 3.0.10 Vetinari (revision 3.0.10-0-g7f145afa84)
[0000558de8dea5b0] main libvlc: Esecuzione di vlc con l'interfaccia predefinita. Usa 'cvlc' per utilizzare vlc senza interfaccia.

[0000558de8eb2430] main playlist: end of playlist, exiting
QObject::~QObject: Timers cannot be stopped from another thread
In the past (months or a couple of years ago) the same files played correctly with vlc.
My laptop is an asus n752vx with i7-6700hq, 16GB RAM, nvidia 950M with proprietary drivers set up in order to always use the discrete card instead of the intel one and with prime enabled using nvidia-drm.modeset=1 and this is mine xorg.conf:
Section "Module"
Load "modesetting"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "nvidia"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection
Can you please help me to solve or investigate further this issue?
Thank you,
Xwang

Don't do that.
CoC - Bumping

Avi and mpeg are container formats that can use lots of different codecs.
Use a tool like mediainfo[1] to get accurate information about which codecs are used in the problem files.
That info may allow to figure out which codec gives the problems.

Meantime I've discovered that if I install vlc using flatpak, it works without any issue, but I would like to understand why the vlc installed using pacman does not.
I'm still learning English so please excuse me if my English is not good enough and feel free to correct me via PM if you want.

Seems it uses an older videocodec , the proprietary H.263 .
run vlc --list on the stock vlc and the flatpak vlc and compare the outputs.
I kinda expect the flatpak one to list more modules.
Incase those module lists are the same, try playing the file from an xterm with both players and post the output.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

The two lists are pretty the same. Flatpack has less modules, but has some that archlinux vlc does not have.
Comparing the two list on the basis of the modules name nothing seems related to H.263 AFAIK.
Running both VLCs in xterm gives the same output as in the first post of the thread.
I'm still learning English so please excuse me if my English is not good enough and feel free to correct me via PM if you want.

That suggests its time to look beyond vlc .
please post the outputs of
$ glxinfo -B
$ lspci -k
$ vdpauinfo #comes with community/vdpauinfo
and xorg logfile.
note : to get output in english, prepend commands with LC_ALL=C .

I have the feeling your issue with vlc is a symptom of an underlying problem with your graphics setup .
The outputs help to figure out if that's correct.

The * indicates that the videocard at 0@0:2;0 is primary gpu and lspci shows 00:02.0 is the intel iGPU .
The xorg conf you posted in #1 doesn't set a PrimaryGPU , so those 3 outputs combine into : the intel card is your primary gpu, nvidia is secondary .
However, glxinfo , vdpauinfo and others see your nvidia card without special options/vars , which normally means the nvidia card is primary card.
You also state
My laptop is an asus n752vx with i7-6700hq, 16GB RAM, nvidia 950M with proprietary drivers set up in order to always use the discrete card instead of the intel one and with prime enabled using nvidia-drm.modeset=1
.
There can be only one primary gpu so we need to investigate further.
How did you make sure the nvidia card is used, are you using one of the methods on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus page ?
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

I've used (or at least tried to) the https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … phics_only.
Now I see that maybe I've missed the Option "PrimaryGPU" "yes" in the Xorg.conf, but since glxinfo , vdpauinfo and others see your nvidia card, I was sure it was not needed.
Should I try to add it?
I'm still learning English so please excuse me if my English is not good enough and feel free to correct me via PM if you want.

I've renamed the xorg.conf and followed the wiki and this is the X0rg.log and now the primary card is the nvidia:

I'm still learning English so please excuse me if my English is not good enough and feel free to correct me via PM if you want.
