[SOLVED] Sporadic Input Lag in Terminal Prompt

This issue has been going on for over a year; it's not the result of some recent update.

Occasionally (about 10-20% of the time) when I type quickly in urxvt, a single keypress gets heavily delayed. For example, I can try to type "git commit," but only "git commi" will show up. This lag is on the order of seconds, and also seems to end if I make another keypress. To continue the previous example, I might press T again if I am not confident that the first T went through, and then the line instantly updates to "git committ." If I don't press anything instead because I am 100% sure that I did press T, I have to wait 1-2 seconds before the line "updates" itself. This is especially annoying when my return key input is eaten; I sit there staring at the screen for half a second before I realize that the lag has occurred, and pressing return again to immediately see the output also gets me an extra empty newline at the end. I don't think this is natural input latency from terminal emulators; those seem to be on the order of milliseconds while my delays are half a second long at least. Rarely, I can even see the immediate feedback from my keypress, and then the cursor "snaps back" to where it was 1-2 keystrokes ago, effectively showing me the same end result as if I had encountered the lag.

Here are fixes I've tried in the past unsuccessfully:
I have changed picom's renderer to xrender, and then disabled picom completely. Could still encounter the issue.
I've tried switching from zsh to sh. The lag took a few more tries to reproduce, but it still happened.
I've tried switching from urxvt to xterm. Again, it was harder to reproduce, but it still happened.
I turned off xft fonts and went back to the default bitmap font. The lag still occurred.
I also tried turning off urxvt buffering, which again didn't help.

Some other information that could be relevant:
I'm on a Dell XPS13, running i3wm and no display manager.
The lag does not occur on a TTY.
I don't see anything interesting in my journalctl logs.

It's probably no input lag, but a glitch in the framebuffer.

I tried running tail -f on the file to see if anything would get added when I encountered the glitch, but I reproduced the lag a couple of times and the log stayed unchanged.

Note that I can still get the issue when typing in xterm (albeit at a lower rate), so I don't think it's an issue with my urxvt settings.

Re: [SOLVED] Sporadic Input Lag in Terminal Prompt

Drop xf86-video-intel and see whether the issue remains.

Re: [SOLVED] Sporadic Input Lag in Terminal Prompt

I removed xf86-video-intel and I still encountered the glitch. The only difference I noticed was my polybar doesn't show up anymore; and my i3wm log had the line

polybar|error: Monitor "eDP1" not found or disconnected

Re: [SOLVED] Sporadic Input Lag in Terminal Prompt

Thanks so much for your help. I reinstalled xf86-video-intel and then applied the first fix you linked to set TearFree to true. I believe the issue has been fixed; I spent around 20 minutes in urxvt and didn't encounter the glitch once. I am a bit curious on why this worked - could my issue just have been screen tearing?

Re: [SOLVED] Sporadic Input Lag in Terminal Prompt

Yes and no. Tearing occurs when the scanout buffer is updated regardless of the vblank interval.
A way to combat that is pageflipping (ie. you have a front- and a backbuffer, all output is rendered into the backbuffer and when finished the backbuffer and the frontbuffer are flipped on the next vblank signal) and as a byproduct this *might* have addressed framebuffer update artifacts. You should still keep an eye on this and feel free to re-open the thread if the problem re-emerges (and the other known caveats don't apply)
