[SOLVED] Trouble with i3 install

First time using arch. Wanted to try i3wm while I'm already learning something new. I have it installed on a virtual machine.

I have  a fresh install of arch, up-to-date and have network connection. I have installed i3 gaps i3blocks i3lock i3status, added "startx exec i3" to .xinitrc. I also installed xorg, xorg-server, xorg-init, xorg-twm, xorg-xclock, xterm.

After reboot I logged into the user account I created then tried to run "startx" and get errors.

It looks like it tries to start up but then ends with:

Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. (EE) (EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error

I have read forum posts, multiple wiki pages, and followed youtube videos. I feel like I just haven't install something required that I'm not seeing anywhere I have been going. I cannot figure this out.

It tells you to look at the log for more information. Did you do that?

Yes.

Failed to open protocol names file lib/xorg/protocol.txt

I am looking into that now

So far I haven't found much. One post says that the error is harmless. I have found something about DEFAULT_MODULE_PATH but not much about how to actually fix it.

Try removing the startx, so that it reads exec i3...?

Thank you. That is what i am using when I get the error.

I am going to try something else. Will report back with results.

So far nothing worked. Since it is a vm I decided to restart from the beginning. Fresh install.
Went through a tutorial that says it's for fresh install. Didn't work. I would be lying if I said it isn't making me homicidal seeing it work perfectly for people and completely failing for me. Makes me think something very important is being left out.

The Installation Guide is the only tutorial that's supported. If you used something else, go ask the author of that tutorial for help.

Makes me think something very important is being left out.

The idiots that write these "tutorials" are clueless about Arch. The Installation Guide is the only documentation worth reading and, as Scimmia points out, all that is supported here.

Yes. I know that it is the only official supported guide. I'm am not saying otherwise. I am not saying that anyone that has written any tutorial, including the official arch wiki, is dumb. All I am saying is that I can't help but feel like something is being left out somewhere. I assume that most of these guides, including the arch wiki, are written assuming that the reader already has a base knowledge of arch. As I am brand new to arch I don't have very much knowledge of it. If there is something that has been left out because it is assumed that it is already known, I have been unsuccessful in finding that information, in the wiki or otherwise. I didn't mean to come off as blaming others, I am just frustrated cause I have been trying to get this to work for three days.

Holy guacamole, I finally got it to work!!!!!

On my fresh install I installed i3, xorg, and lightdm. Hopefully it keeps running.
