I have a nvidia Geforce GTX 750 ti and for the longest time assumed this was a nvidia driver problem that would work itself out...until it didnt. The offending update occurred 4/11/2020, and rolling back the following packages to 4/10/2020 resolves the problem:
[2020-07-20T17:11:01-0400] [ALPM] downgraded libffi (3.3-3 -> 3.2.1-4)
[2020-07-20T17:11:01-0400] [ALPM] downgraded libp11-kit (0.23.20-4 -> 0.23.20-3)
[2020-07-20T17:11:01-0400] [ALPM] downgraded p11-kit (0.23.20-4 -> 0.23.20-3)
I'm about at a loss. The behavior is strange too, I'm not using a DM, so X is launched from my .zprofile. X appears to start and then drops back to a login prompt. switching to TTY2 and attempting a startx without all the scripts spits out a bunch of errors that I'm skeptical are at the root of the problem: image

for anyone else who stumbles across this issue, for whatever the reason, the version on awesome in the repositories isn't up to date enough for compatibility with the newer versions of the packages listed above. This was resolved by upgrading to awesome-git from the AUR.
