Scanimage crops small resolutions, but not anything higher

I am hoping someone could shed some light on this issue. I am using sane + scanimage to scan some photographs with a Canon Canoscan LiDE 220. I noticed that there is a --swcrop option which auto-crops scans perfectly if I set resolution to 150 or below, however if I set it to 300 or higher it doesn't crop at all.

This is an issue because it would greatly increase my speed and improve my workflow for scanning some old family photos, 150dpi is not exactly archive quality for photo scans. I was really excited to see it work at lower res scans, but then crushed to see it fail at higher DPI settings.
