No audio, fresh install

Hi all

I have just finished installing Arch on a new laptop and although everything else is working fine, I am not getting any audio output either from the in-built speakers or from headphones. I have spent the last few hours googling this and reading what seems like every thread on the internet about audio problems haha. But I still haven't been able to resolve it. I was hoping somebody could help me.

I don't currently have any ~/.asoundrc, /etc/asound.conf or /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf files, although I have tried a few different options in all of them, but so far none have worked so I've deleted them all to start over.

These are the outputs of some commands that seemed like they may be relevant...

Re: No audio, fresh install

See if you can generate sound from ALSA alone first before adding pulseaudio:

killall pulseaudio
speaker-test -c 2

Do you get any sound? What's the output?

Re: No audio, fresh install

Hi, thank you! I tried that, but I am still not getting any audio.

The output was:

[patu@arch ~]$ killall pulseaudio
[patu@arch ~]$ speaker-test -c 2

speaker-test 1.2.3

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 96 to 1048576
Period size range from 32 to 349526
Using max buffer size 1048576
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 262144
was set buffer_size = 1048576
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 10.949215
 0 - Front Left

Re: No audio, fresh install

Again, kill pulseaudio (and make sure it stays dead with 'pidof pulseaudio'), then open alsamixer and check:
- any playback channels muted (MM)?
- change soundcard with F6?

Re: No audio, fresh install

Have you checked if your cards are unmuted? Check with alsamixer.
Have a good read of the ALSA link from my previous post.

EDIT: @ondoho you beat me to it...

I killed pulseaudio with "killall pulseaudio" and it just automatically restarted itself, so I tried with "pulseaudio --kill" and "ps aux | grep pulseaudio" and then killed the pid, but in each case it just immediately restarts. I can't find any systemd units that relate to pulseaudio and so I don't actually know how to kill it and prevent it from automatically restarting...

(EDIT: Also I have checked with alsamixer and unmuted all the channels.)

EDIT2: Okay I have managed to stop pulseaudio, but I am still not getting any output from speaker-test. sad

For the reference of anyone reading this, I found this thread which explains how to stop pulseaudio: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=235854. You have to stop the socket then the service:

[patu@arch ~]$ systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.socket
[patu@arch ~]$ systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.service

I am reading through it at the moment. I did already read it earlier when I started troubleshooting, however it is true that I was not very thorough. So hopefully something will jump out this time. smile Ty.

Re: No audio, fresh install

In that pacmd cards output you're configured for digital out which is not what you want for standard speaker or headphone jack.  Does

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo #With pulse running again, of course

help? If not please post

amixer -c0

Re: No audio, fresh install

AFAIK, changing soundcards should be possible with a pulseaudio mixer, too - e.g. pavucontrol.

Re: No audio, fresh install

It is, but the command I posted and what you can set there amount to the same thing in the end.

Based on the amixer, a bit of a shot in the dark but that does looks suspicious:

amixer -c0 set 'IEC958 Default PCM',0 off

execute that, and retry.  If it still doesn't work there has been quite some fiddling with jack sensing support in recent kernels so might be a regression here.  Afaik that started with 5.7.9 so try to go down to 5.7.8 or 5.7.7 (don't forget the relevant nvidia package, or switch to the nvidia-dkms package and install the appropriate linux-headers for the kernel you downgrade to: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux_Archive )

For completeness sake what's the exact model/brand of the laptop? Maybe also post

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

so we can ensure that there isn't anything accidentally occupying the device that shouldn't be there.

Re: No audio, fresh install

Hi V1del, thanks again. That didn't help either. It is a bit late here so I am just about to go to bed, but I will try downgrading my kernel after the weekend and update the thread. smile
