2 Arch installations

Hi,
I want to Install Arch a second time with another desktop envirement and other User on a second ssd
When I'm thinking about it I'm asking me how to do with Kernel img File to something like vmlinuz2.img .

But in the case of Updates I have to do manually work every time. Anybody experience in that?

Re: 2 Arch installations

install a second DE and make a second user on the main installation. This is no reason to have a second install.

Re: 2 Arch installations

But in other threads they suggest not to do multiple DEs because the DEs are instabil and buggy then. Or is this only with the same User?

Re: 2 Arch installations

In general, that's nonsense, no matter how many users.

Re: 2 Arch installations

You can have multiple users each one using a different DE, nothing bad will happen because of that.

And yeah, don’t launch GNOME and KDE plasma on the same user...many archers have complained already of that fsckderping their configs...that as an example...

Re: 2 Arch installations

If all you want is another DE, just install another DE.  You don't need another user and certainly not another installation.

It's not uncommon for some archers (myself included) to gripe about DEs and highlight that they really aren't necessary for anything.  But installing them under different users or installation will not mitigate this critique in the slightest.  If you want multiple DEs, just install multiple DEs.

Re: 2 Arch installations

Thx to all. I had doubt abut multiple DEs because it's really easy to accidentily log as the wrong user in the wrong DE and in this moment the config/envirement files would be created.

But another Idea with the second arch Installation (storage space is no problem) could be to use the lts-kernel in the other Installation. Then I wouldnt have issues with the filenames?

Re: 2 Arch installations

Same thing re. DEs. You just install the -lts kernel alongside the vanilla one and create an additonal entry in your boot loader/manager and choose which kernel to boot into when you power up.

And I have no idea what your perceived issue with filenames is, but it has nothing to do with your kernel.

Re: 2 Arch installations

In the case of 2 independent arch Installations I would have a filename issue with the files in the Boot partition. Because default the .img files would created with the same name.
Renaming would be possible but with Kernel Update and mkcpio... the name would be created everytime with default names from both arch Installations.  But I think with lts the name would be created with the lts in it

Idk about your bootloader setup, the filename issue may arise in the case of systemd-boot with some unified ESP for all distros? Causing one distro to override the kernel for other?

Anyways things shouldn't even be like that, in the case you are worried by a mistake during logon using some of those DM, you might consider launching whatever DE/WM that you use with xorg-xinit or sx.
Both are packages, the first covered in the wiki, the second it's so simple that it's man page it's enough.

That way it's impossible to launch the wrong DE/WM with each respective user, since each will have different init files.

EDIT: to slow replying...

If they were intended to be independent, they would have their own /boot partitions.

It's been ages since I used a display/login manager, but I'm sure this can be restricted accordingly.

Sorry, but this is just nonsense.
