Abiword and Chinese

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what do I need to do to get Abiword to display Chinese fonts?

Because of the sparse information provided I'll guess that you're hitting https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=248032 and not struggle to "just install a font that covers chinese glyphs"…

I downgraded pango but it was still not properly showing Chinese. I prefer the lighter weight Abiword but I went ahead and installed LibreOffice and Chinese fonts are now displayed.

Downgradig pango isn't a good idea anyway - rather ensure to have a non-pcf font that provides cjk gylphs.
Since this is (apparently?) not the problem to begin with, I suggest to post a (link to a) screenshot illustrating the actual problem.

Ok, here it is:

As you can see, the Chinese characters are squares with 4-digit hexidecimal.

Abiword has a page about adding fonts but none of the file locations they list can be found.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

It displayed a lot of stuff that I suspect you don't want to see -- the character on wiktionary is the Chinese character for the number 1, not an emdash. I can post the output anyway if you'd like to see it but it is pages and pages of stuff like

The glyph is resolved from Droid Sans which would not be affected by the pango situation.
There's (very old) https://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=12291 which suggests that Abiword doesn't use fallback fonts - does the text look better if you change the document font from Arial to Droid Sans?

Ok, checked it.
The issue is actually Droid Sans which doesn't provide this glyph itself but incorporates it from Droid Sans Japanese and Abiword somehow™ doesn't follow this redirection…

Ok, thanks! I'll just stick to LibreOffice. Too much trouble to figure out exactly how to get these fonts to work...

I mostly use LaTeX and Markdown anyway and only occasionally need a traditional word processor.
