I just switched from a single monitor setup to a triple monitor setup by adding two newer monitors. There are two issues:
During POST and initram, only the two newer monitors display an image. My older (and primary) monitor doesn't "turn on" until some time just before the display manager starts. This isn't a major problem, but I was curious to know if anyone had an explanation.
The scaling is nuts. My icons are now HUGE. The KDE Plasma start menu, for example, now takes up nearly the entire screen. I always set the DisplaySize option so X can choose the right DPI, so I don't know why it's doing this. When I try to manually set the DPI in a terminal using "xrandr --dpi 96", only the konsole application window is affected.
This is the X configuration file for my old, single monitor setup (with properly functioning DPI detection):

What are the outputs of "xrandr -q" and "xdpyinfo| grep resolution" before altering the DPI w/ xrandr?
(The latter will typically only affect new processes and those actively monitoring and responding to those randr events - a minority)

resolution: 205x171 dots per inchI discovered that I can fix the problem by starting the X session with "startx -- -dpi 96" instead of "startx".
Now I'd like to find a way to incorporate that server dpi option in my ~/.xinitrc file so that I can go back to using the shorter "startx" command.
My display manager (SDDM) is bugged and I can't rely on it to start my X sessions, but if I start using it again then I'd like to know how to configure it similarly.

So it was taking the size of a single monitor and applying it to the entire multi-screen display?
Are commands in /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsetup executed even when SDDM is disabled?

The script is supposed to be intrepreted by SDDM - unless you (or some other software) source it as well.
So: usually™ no.

In that case, how could I persistently set a DPI without using a display manager?
If I set the default target to multiuser and add "startx -- -dpi XX" to my login profile, that would run X every time I login. But let's say I only want to start an X session some of the time. Is there a file I can edit which would change the default behavior of "startx" (without using an alias)?
