How does clamav work

I have a fat32 formated drive that i share between windows and linux as i dual boot. On many ocassions i have downloaded a file in linux without any virus warning only to open it in windows to be prompted that it is infected.

My questions is i have Clamav installed, how come it didn't prompt me? Is it that its no good. How do configire it to scan downloaded files etc you like it works in windows?

Clamav doesn't have real-time scanning last I checked. You will have to scan the files manually.

If you use clamuko and dazuko you can enable on access file scanning (if clamd is running). You have to tell it what to do with infected files though, otherwise it'll spend all that time scanning, find a virus, and smile sweetly at you. Clamav is not one of my favourate programs to configure, but it is well worth it
