I recently started playing around with virtual machines in virtualbox and I have come to a problem. Whenever a VM is open, no sound can be heard but as soon as the vm is powered off, the sound comes back.
Linux is simple, but it takes a genius to understand it

What's the output of
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
from the host during this?
In general you need to configure it so that it doesn't occupy a physical device exclusively, so this depends on what you have set up here. If you use pulseaudio configure the pulse backend, if it's using ALSA make sure it uses the 'default' device as opposed to a distinct card. Post the log from a virtualbox machine start.
