Hi. Arch n00b here.
I have a laptop that has Arch linux installed on it which I connect via a KVM switch my dual monitor display for my desktop (I can only use one of them since my laptop only has one HDMI output). The display shows up, but I am only seeing 1920x1080 on the screen and in the Display settings as the maximum resolution. The maximum resolution on the monitor is 2560x1440 at 75 Hz (It is an HP Omen 32) which I would like to set the display to because it is the recommended setting. I have run through the Arch linux procedure using xrandr as described in the Wiki to add the new resolution and everything works fine up until the point I try to set the output to the newly added resolution but I get the following error:
This works: xrandr --newmode "2560x1440_75.00" 397.25 2560 2760 3040 3520 1440 1443 1448 1506 -hsync +vsync
This works: xrandr --addmode HDMI1 2560x1440_75.00
This fails: xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 2560x1440_75.00 --verbose

So, I don't know what the problem is and I've looked in various places and can't seem to find anything that will help.

The weak link is probably the KVM switch, check it's specs.

Maximum graphic resolution 2560 × 1440 (75 Hz)

Horizontal frequency 24 kHz ~ 115 kHz
Vertical refresh rate 48 Hz ~ 75 Hz

Laptop can easily display 4K max resolution according to specs: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en … 0-ghz.html.
I also tried directly plugging the HDMI cable from the laptop directly into the monitor (bypassing the KVM switch from the equation as you suggested it might be an issue) and the same failure occurred.
I tried various lower vertical refresh rates (60 and below) to also lower the pclk, but those failed as well.
I don't know what cvt12 but briefly looking it up I guess it's a modeline calculator you have to compile yourself (which I haven't done).
Is this a bug somewhere? I'm not sure how to assess these type of things on Arch. I sure hope this can be resolved because it's really annoying on my eyes to suffer a 1920x1200 resolution on this monitor.

When you remove the kvm, is the 2560 × 1440 resolution picked up automatically?
(post the complete Xorg log)
Have you ever used the cable for that resolution?
(Is it a "Premium High Speed" cable - yes, that's the official version tag…)
Are there any adapters involved?
Lastly, try to drop xf86-video-intel and check the behavior w/ the modesetting driver.

No. I connected the HDMI cable directly from the laptop to the monitor and rebooted. It did not pick up the resolution automatically.

Yes. Previously I used a work laptop via a docking station using the same cable through the KVM and received full resolution (at least in Windows 10).
Are there any adapters involved?
No. It's a either direct connection to the monitor (or through the KVM) via cables only.
Lastly, try to drop xf86-video-intel and check the behavior w/ the modesetting driver.
This I am unaware of how to do.
Apparently, I have no conf files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/.

The only EDID found is

The xorg log is not supposed to cover a failed attempt to set the higher resolution, is it?
This I am unaware of how to do.
Just remove the package and ensure there's nothing referencing the intel driver left in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d

Ok. I removed the package and rebooted but the resolution of the monitor wasn't picked up. Now I have "HDMI-1" instead of "HDMI1". Strange. Went through setting the modeline with the value you provided again. Same issue though.

It's more likely that one link doesn't support HDMI 1.3 or up (just because the IGP can generate a certain signal, does not mean the HDMI output can)
The monitor should™ do on QHD/60 w/ reduced blanking and you asserted the cable is good as well.

No go at that rate. Shuts off the monitor which I guess gets no signal.
Unfortunately, I do not have a DP output. My monitor has a DP input and I tried connecting directly from the laptop HDMI through a DP adapter to the monitor and got no picture. Arch didn't even see that the monitor was plugged in in the Cinnamon display settings..
The HDMI cable definitely worked through the KVM via another laptop docking station so I don't think it's a cable issue. Is it the HDMI port issue on the laptop?

Yes, I get no error. The monitor just shuts off because of the signal.
I tried the other modeline you provided and again the monitor shuts off due to a lack of signal.
The notebook model is: Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series Touchscreen Laptop - 10th Gen Intel Core i5-1035G1 - 1080p - Blue.
Bought it at Costco over a year ago except it was blue with less HD space at the time, but I believe this is the one: https://www.costco.com/dell-inspiron-15 … 46486.html
HDMI is 1.4b is according to the page.

So, is this a bug or not?
The specs of the laptop seem to allow for such a resolution both the GPU and the port as I had assumed it would since it's a relatively new laptop.
I have not tried connecting my laptop in Windows 10 mode to see if I can get the 2560x1440 resolution because installing Grub when installing Arch caused some issue with the Windows 10 boot which no longer works that I have ignored for now.

The monitor seems to hat two HDMI inputs, try the other one.

I did try the other HDMI input and same issue resulted.
The only thing left is to try a new HDMI cable, but the cable I am using is one of those that came with the monitor (I have two of the same monitors and I have tried both monitors and both ports on them), and as I said before, those cables at least worked with my work laptop directly or via a docking station for Windows 10.
So, from a causal perspective, it seems like it can only be an issue with the laptop (but the specs say the GPU supports up to 4K and the port supports HDMI 1.4b) which is sufficient, the cable, or the Arch Linux driver.
