Re: [SOLVED] Error in TeXLive hook while running pacman -Syu

To answer how bad that is it depends.  The update completed, so any harm in the failure of the pacman hook would be limited to LaTeX - it may not work properly, but the rest of your system would not be impacted by the failure of the pacman hook.

However, the pacman hook failed because there is an existing deeper problem on your system that may affect other things.  On first glance it looks like your locale is not properly configured.  And while that should still be checked, there is a more likely explanation given other errors that have recently come up on the forums (link will be coming soon at the end of this post): it may be that there is an issue with Perl or with your Perl installation/configuration that screws up it's reading of locale variables.

So first, to rule out the larger problem, please post the output of each of the following in code tags:

localectl
locale -a
grep -v '^#' /etc/locale.gen
cat /etc/locale.conf

Assuming these all look ok, we should figure out what's wrong with perl - unfortunately I know next to nothing about perl and am not well equipped to help troubleshoot it.  But first steps may include sharing the output of the following:

type perl
pacman -Qkk perl
ls -d /usr/share/perl*
ls /usr/share/perl*

The same perl error was seen in a completely different context here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=258302

Re: [SOLVED] Error in TeXLive hook while running pacman -Syu

What is the output of "umask" ? It seems to me that you were having some permission problem (e.g. cannot copy log luajithbtex.log to: /var/lib/texmf/web2c/luajithbtex). According to https://www.tug.org/texlive/doc/texlive … ve-en.html the perl script that installs texlive requieres umask = 002.

I use latex extensively and my output was indeed 002. I upgraded successfully texlive, via pacman, a couple of days ago and log files in /var/lib/texmf/web2c/ were created without any issues.

Re: [SOLVED] Error in TeXLive hook while running pacman -Syu

Upon further looking into this problem I stumbled onto this very old post: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/16467 which led me into this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Te … pon_update

They mention this could be a problem with language.dat and some hyphenation for German. The propose a solution there. Have a look and see if it helps.

Really sorry for the late replies everyone!

There definitely is some problem with locale, but it hasn't really bothered me in the past so I generally ignore the occasional minor error messages. For instance, I get the following error when opening up a man page:

man: can't set the locale; make sure $LC_* and $LANG are correct

I tried echoing both $LC_* and $LANG. This is the output I get:

nan-af@Fe-Laptop ~> echo $LC_*

nan-af@Fe-Laptop ~> echo $LANG
en_PK.UTF-8

As for the commands you requested:

nan-af@Fe-Laptop ~> localectl
   System Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
       VC Keymap: n/a
      X11 Layout: n/a
nan-af@Fe-Laptop ~> locale -a
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_COLLATE to default locale: No such file or directory
C
POSIX
en_GB.utf8
en_US.utf8
ur_PK
ur_PK.utf8
nan-af@Fe-Laptop ~> grep -v '^#' /etc/locale.gen
en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
ur_PK UTF-8
nan-af@Fe-Laptop ~> cat /etc/locale.conf
LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
nan-af@Fe-Laptop ~> type perl
perl is /usr/bin/perl
nan-af@Fe-Laptop ~> pacman -Qkk perl
perl: 2799 total files, 0 altered files
nan-af@Fe-Laptop ~> ls -d /usr/share/perl*
/usr/share/perl5/
nan-af@Fe-Laptop ~> ls /usr/share/perl*

I don't use German though (or LaTeX or perl for that matter. They are just installed as dependencies)

Re: [SOLVED] Error in TeXLive hook while running pacman -Syu

Sorry that grep command should have had the '-v' flag, I edited my previous post.  Could you edit yours with the new grep output?

The output we have so far confirms this is a locale problem.  You need to fix that:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Locale

Which instructions did you follow to first install this system?

Done

I followed the official install guide on ArchWiki, but this is my first time, so I might have messed up somewhere.

Re: [SOLVED] Error in TeXLive hook while running pacman -Syu

You have LANG set to a locale that you have not generated: en_PK.  From what I can tell, that is not even a valid locale.  Was that meant to be ur_PK or perhaps en_US or en_GB?

Re: [SOLVED] Error in TeXLive hook while running pacman -Syu

Once again, excuse the late reply please

Trilby wrote:

I am sure this is a valid locale, but it appears that it may not be natively supported in Arch Linux.

I am using KDE and en_PK does, in fact show up in the list of available locales.

https://i.imgur.com/t3X8IUs.png

However, en_PK is not in /etc/locale.gen. What should I do in this case other than switching my locale?

Re: [SOLVED] Error in TeXLive hook while running pacman -Syu

Ok "valid" is ambiguous.  But just the same, you cannot simply set locale variables to arbitrary settings.  You must generate the locale first with locale-gen.  Do not set the locale variables to anything that has not been generated by locale-gen as doing so is not valid.

If you are sure en_PK is an existing locale, you'll need to find a copy of the locale files for it.  It does not appear to be in the repos, and I can't find anything in either the AUR or via a google search that would suggest such a locale exists.  You could certainly create it yourself if you wanted, but you'd need to do so - again, setting the LANG variable to something that doesn't represent a locale on your system is most likely the cause of the problem with TeX.

Re: [SOLVED] Error in TeXLive hook while running pacman -Syu

$ pkgfile -vr en_PK
extra/ibus-typing-booster 2.9.1-1 /usr/share/ibus-typing-booster/data/annotations/en_PK.xml.gz
community/perl-datetime-locale 1.22-2	/usr/share/man/man3/DateTime::Locale::en_PK.3pm.gz
community/python-babel 2.8.0-4 /usr/lib/python3.8/site-packages/babel/locale-data/en_PK.dat
community/python2-babel 2.8.0-4 /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/babel/locale-data/en_PK.dat

No matches in the glibc package (valid glibc locales would show up in e.g. /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_US) so it's not a valid LC_* or LANG variable value. But some other packages do reference it, and it's not clear how they're expected to function.
