[SOLVED] Cannot connect to the Internet, Network connection successful

SOLUTION: ICMP Packets are blocked by my router, so even though I have internet, using ping, traceroute or tracepath would indicate that I don't.
If you intend to use these tools, allow ICMP packets through your network firewalls!

Hello All,

(Possibly relevant) Specifications:

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
Motherboard: Asus X570-E
Ethernet Ports: Intel I211-AT 1GBe and RTL-8215-CG 2.5GBe
Wireless (+ Bluetooth): Intel Wifi 6 AX200

I'm following the beginners installation guide.

While I can connect to my home network with both Ethernet ports and WiFi and can ping my local router with all three, I cannot ping any address on the internet. I've tried pinging:
   archlinux.org
   www.google.com
   8.8.8.8

All three ping attempts hang at (I'm using $ as a placeholder for the real address here):

"PING $DNSaddress ($IPaddress) 56(84) bytes of data."

Nothing more is output until i hit CTRL + C, after which I get:

"$NumberOfPackets packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time $time ms"

I get 100% packet loss no matter the interface I use.

output of "ip link" shows the interface I use at any given time has a state of "UP"

output of "ip route" is:

default via 192.168.1.254 dev enp6s0 proto dhcp src 192.168.1.68 metric 512
192.168.1.0/24 dev enp6s0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.68
192.168.1.254 dev enp6s0 proto dhcp scope link src 192.168.1.68 metric 512

I've searched google, and found nothing of use (to a noob).
The installation guide instructs to "connect the cable"... So I'm not sure what's going wrong.
I'm not sure where to go from here.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Sunny

This thread duplicates your thread in Installation. Cross-posting is a bad practice:

Hi Philo,
Sorry about that. I posted this thread initially but thought it would fit better in Installation. I wasn't sure how to delete this one.

I need to inquire of thee:
Static network or DHCP?
To rule out collision
you'll go on a mission,
make sure it's a unique IP!

I like the rhyme big_smile
DHCP.

I'm sure there's no collision; I've been leased different IP's by the router each time I "shutdown -r now".

After further testing I think I may have internet after all... I've been testing with ping and tracepath... though it seems that may be blocked by my router.
I've obviously got internet on the windows machine I'm posting these replies from, though neither ping nor tracert can get past the router on either machine.

and... yep. Running the Installation_guide script indeed brings up the guide. I feel silly, I can't believe I didn't think of ICMP blocking before this... It's been HOURS!

May I suggest adding a note to the installation guide about the (mostly) standard practice of ICMP packet blocking?
I didn't think of it until now.
Granted, that's something I definitely should have thought of, but I think a note within the guide would help newbie users like myself avoid spending hours debugging a problem that doesn't actually exist.

Though nobody suggested a fix, I consider this solved.

Check if ICMP packets are blocked by your router before using ping!

If you have a splendid idea
for the wiki that might interfere,
create an account
click discussion - profound -
and leave your additions right here.

Your problem has slightly evolved.
Your router was tightly involved.
You are on the net,
firewalled, I expect!
Please mark your own title as [Solved].

Ah, I wish there were a reputation counter to add to big_smile
Thank you for a wonderful introduction to the fora, I'll head on over and suggest it now.
