[solved]stacked / tabbed layouts no longer work in i3-gaps

I recently made the switch from i3 to i3-gaps. I've been very pleased with the switch but for one hitch.

Since enabling the gaps, stacked and tabbed layouts don't happen.

bindsym $mod+s layout stacking

is what I have in my config. It simply does not happen.

Before I wrack my brain about this, I was wondering if this wasn't just a feature that's missing when gaps are enabled.

Nevermind. After restarting X, it works fine.
