I have a brand new installation, with MATE desktop environment, running x11.
After startx the keyboard is unresponsive.
Some search in forums led me to the https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=237782. I suspect I have the same situation, however I do not have a touch screen, and the thread didn't provide a solution.

and produces no further output on any keypress. The line "switch tablet-mode state 1" makes me think that I do have a tablet mode on.

My question is how to disable the tablet mode.
