Freezing AMD System

I have a new laptop with an AMD CPU and GPU, but I can't figure out why it is freezing.

The steps to reproduce on my are: Booting, login, startx.
After that it frezzs and doesn't react to anything, except pressing the power button.

I should mention, that there is no xf86-video-* installed, so I don't expect the XServer to start, but it should not freeze.

I have logs from journalctl -b-1 from such an situation:

I think the interesting part starts at Sep 05 18:11:36.

Re: Freezing AMD System

The only thing that seems to jump out to me is that something, most likely the amdgpu, attempted to access NX protected pages, then your system failed. I don't run an amd gpu, so I'm not familiar with how the driver loads. Have you tried turning off NX protection in your EFI? Other than that, I'm useless about this.

Re: Freezing AMD System

I think my EFI doesn't have such an option, and I don't think that it would prevent problems, because the real error is, that it tries to execute such a page.

I think the NX error is merely a symptom something went wrong and not related to the cause of the problems.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: Freezing AMD System

Thanks for that hint.

With a trial-and-error of module settings I find out, that in my case amdgui.ext_hw_support=1 and ras_enable=0 was sufficient to solve the problem, but I will need to evaluate if it is completly stable.

Re: Freezing AMD System

I've been having similar freezes; I've been thinking about starting my own thread but noticed you may be having the same problem.

I have a question on your case: is it an instant freeze when you startx, or does it happen later?

Also, what DE are you using? Depending on the DE the symptoms might be different, as they may use the GPU differently. I'm using KDE/Plasma.

In my case it's never a freeze immediately at startX; instead it happens later and freezes always happen when opening new windows, or, say, resizing a pane in a window. When the freeze happens, the X.Org session will become totally unresponsive and can not be shut down cleanly (the screen is frozen) There will be various Kernel error in journal relating to amdgpu. Also, as I can not usually shut down cleanly, I still can use SysRQ or SSH into the computer (but the driver bug will also hang the CPUs somehow, so that an attempted shutdown will stall indefinitely).

Curiously, if I can open, say, an AAA game, there will never be a freeze during a gaming session (unless I switch away from the game and open new windows). Depending on luck, I may be able to work on the desktop for only 10-15 minutes to some hours, sometimes maybe even up to and over 12 hours (seems like some desktop applications are more likely to trigger the freezes than others).

This is on Intel processor but amdgpu (RX Vega 64). Problematic Kerneles have been 5.8.3 and 5.8.5, and possibly setting amdgpu.pabm=0 made the system stabile for me. However, a longer test is needed to make sure (the freezes were never 100% sure in my case, although they are always related to opening new windows etc.). Also, just as I disabled that option, the Kernel also got upgraded to 5.8.6; so maybe the interim versions were just more buggy. Haven't (yet) reproduced it on 5.8.6.

Re: Freezing AMD System

I am using xfce4 and in the case where I test and create the log files, it was always an instant freeze, with a clean installation. Before that I tested it with a installation restored from an backup. There xfce4 started, but there were some random freezes and it freezed every time I tried to stat CLion, strage isn't itß

Re: Freezing AMD System

Ok, thanks for the information.

It seems my system is stable now, even with bapm=1 (I tried again to reproduce by opening and closing repeatedly application windows which I know to be problematic, but couldn't reproduce the crash; it is possible I was just lucky / it requires something else in conjuction to trigger). I can also see there have been some PM fixes in amdgpu from 5.8.5 -> 5.8.6, so it is certainly possible whatever caused it was fixed. I will return in case I still get crashes (probably in another thread, unless I have a strong feeling our crashes are related).

Also, a possible workaround: try the LTS Kernel. I know it was rock solid for me, without any extra module parameters. Perhaps it works for you, too (as a workaround of course).
